The children’s’ song “Rain, Rain Go Away” is appropriate for my area of the country. Heavy and continual storms lingered for days, leaving roads closed, fields underwater, and rivers pushing over their banks. Persistent gray skies affect the temperament of everyone. There’s an attitude that sneaks in and causes us to want to hide under the covers until the storms pass. After all, who wants to face another day of running through the rain or fight yet another losing battle with a windblown umbrella? Watching the rain fly by my window makes me think it will never end. Fortunately, we all know the sun will shine again.
Similarly, when we’re in the middle of a storm in our personal lives, we can be sure the sun is going to shine on us again too. The storm will not last, so we keep looking forward. “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:18) Unfortunately, we are all going to experience storms in our lives. Fortunately, God is our constant protection. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” (Psalm 46:1-3) Hold tight in the storm, because God has a beautiful future planned with you in mind. “He has made everything beautiful in its time…no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11) Are there troubled skies around you? You can put the umbrella away, because it’s time for the sun to shine again.
