God’s GPS

forest-1345747_1920-fallIt’s that time of year when many people are exploring corn mazes.  The corn maze is a giant puzzle you walk in that leads you through loops, curves, and sometimes even to a dead end.  You could get turned around, you might circle back to places you’ve already seen, or you may even get lost.  Most mazes are open only during the day, but occasionally one will be open after dark and you are navigating by a flashlight or the moon, which just adds to the challenge.  Corn mazes are designed for entertainment, but when life gets puzzling, it’s not fun.

We can have so many questions! What happens when we’ve gone in circles, when we’ve come back to that same old spot we said we never would, or when we feel lost? Here’s the good news-we have a guide that is always standing ready to show us the way. From James 1:5, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will given to him.”  Not sure which way to turn? “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalm  32:8) Feel like you’ve been here before? “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with His hand.” (Psalm 37:23-24) And finally, feel like you’re in the dark and can’t see where your life is headed? From Psalm 119:105, “Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Trust God’s GPS, (the Bible). It’s free, it will never say ‘recalculating,’ and it gives perfect directions.

A Good Friend

hiking-922985_1920-in-pairsEveryone should have an inner circle of friends.  We need people we can be real with: straight up honesty-hold nothing back-no judgment-and total freedom.  It’s the trust, support, and love that make these friends so valuable.   With life’s schedules it’s challenging to find the time, but the effort spent with a good friend is always worth it.  I visited one such friend last night and all we did was sit around a campfire sharing life, giving support, and laughing with abandon.  There’s something special about not having to dress up and ‘put on airs,’ to be able to wear those worn jeans and that comfortable t-shirt, and to have no expectations but a simple visit.  That kind of friend is valuable.

You might be surprised to know this is exactly the kind of friend God wants to be.  He’s a ‘come as you are’  kind of friend.  You don’t have to come in your Sunday finest; you can come in your jeans, in your tennis shoes, even in your old cut-offs (my country-girl roots are showing).  His schedule is always open, so you can talk to Him anytime day or night.  “By day the Lord directs His love, at night His song is with me-a prayer to the God of my life.” (Psalm 42:8)  You don’t have to be careful what you say or use words like ‘Thou’ or ‘Thee.’ God loves you exactly as you are.  He just wants to share life with you, to be close to you, and to shower you with His love.  Psalm 33:10, “…but the  Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in Him.”  So go ahead, have that heart to heart.  You can even pick the schedule because God says: anytime, anywhere, you and Me together: priceless.

Perfect Timing

field-for-blogNone of us like to be kept waiting.  We are easily frustrated by long check out lines, slow traffic patterns, and even the popcorn we just put in the microwave seems to takes too long.  But there’s a group of people who know a little something about waiting: American farmers.  They prepare the land, sow the seed, irrigate, fertilize, and then patiently wait.  I know a few farmers and I’ve never seen one try to make it rain, (but I would absolutely video tape it if they did).  Farmers know what to do to get good results: work hard every day, put in a FULL day, use techniques to ensure success, then step back and wait for the harvest. From Galatians 6:9, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Let’s face it, farmers know how to wait.

Do we?  How many times do we try to speed up events in our lives instead of letting them unfold naturally?  In every situation, we need to do all we are able, then step back and allow God’s timing to take place.  From Psalm 130:5-6, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning…”  What have you been hoping for, longing for, waiting for…?  Even if it’s taking a long time, do all that you know to do, then expect that something good is going to happen.  You can trust that God knows a thing or two about timing. From Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…”  So hold tight, wait patiently, and trust God, because His timing is perfect.

The Trees Know a Secret

treeThis summer was a hot and dry one in Northeast Ohio.  There were relentless, unforgiving temperatures in the 90’s day after day.  A once-thriving lawn became brown from the scorching and arid summer.  Although we looked ridiculous, most of us in my neighborhood strategically mowed our lawns where the persistent weeds continued to grow. But here’s an enigma, throughout the dog days of summer, the trees in my yard were still green and thriving.  By looking at them, you’d think they received a perfect allotment of sunshine and rain.   But we know better than that!  Their secret is in the roots.  The roots grow deep to keep the tree stable, to absorb water from the soil, and to get much-needed nutrients.  For that reason, even in a drought, the tree remains healthy and continues to grow.

There’s a lesson for us here.  We go through tough times too.  Deadlines, pressures, bills, health issues, and challenges in relationships can make a season linger.   What do we do when we’re searching for the rain but we’re standing in the fire?  That’s when we go deeper to that place of absolute trust.  Jeremiah 17:7-8 says, “But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.  He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.  It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.  It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”  When trouble comes, and it surely will, we can stand firm because there is help available.   Nahum 1:7, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble.  He cares for those who trust in Him.”  So let’s learn a lesson from the trees: when we go a little deeper it will take us a little higher.

There’s a Better Way

blog Why botherWhy do we waste any time worrying?  Winston Churchill said he heard a story about a man who on his deathbed said he had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which never happened.  Isn’t that the truth?  Why do we lose sleep fretting about things we can’t change?!?  Here’s a sample: We can’t change someone’s mind, we can’t make money appear in our bank accounts, and we can’t make someone do the right thing.  Yet we still spend time worrying about it!   Jesus said in Matthew 6:27, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”  He went on to say, “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Today can have its fair share of problems, so we need to address them as we are able.  But let’s not waste our precious time, energy, and emotions thinking about the challenges that could happen tomorrow.

Thankfully, we can do two things instead of worrying.  First, we can pray. From Jeremiah 29:12, “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.” And from Philippians 4:6, Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” And second: we can have a big bowl of ice cream.  Here’s a few suggestions: Cookie Dough, Butter Pecan, or Heath English Toffee.  Was it a really stressful day? Then go a little crazy and throw a cherry on top.  I wish I had time to recommend more flavors, but alas, there’s something in the freezer calling my name.

Go ahead, jump in!

pool jumping

I recently went to a pool and watched my niece and nephew jump off the diving board a gazillion times (that is only a slight exaggeration).  There was a low board and a high diving board and they tried them both: frequently.  They tried all kinds of ‘tricks’ and didn’t worry about whether they could actually complete them perfectly or not.  There were half-finished cannonballs, dives that were crooked, crazy wiggles at the end of the board, and a few ‘ What WAS that?’ maneuvers.  The most astounding thing happened in the middle of the afternoon when a passing shower sent a deluge over the area for well-over ten minutes.  Did it slow the swimmers down?  Not at all!  However, the adults scrambled for cover and thought about leaving for the day. But not the kids, they continued to jump off the diving boards and laughed merrily as the rain and the pool water collided.

In Matthew 18:3 Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven.”  To understand this verse, let’s look closer at the example of my niece and nephew.  They weren’t performing as if going for a gold medal, they were humbly approaching each dive.  There was a simple acceptance of each other, enjoying the time together.  And when the rainstorm came through, they had complete trust that their parents would get them out of the pool if necessary.  And since their parents weren’t saying it was dangerous, they appreciated each moment, whether in the sun or in the rain.

The lesson?  We can trust our Heavenly Father to watch over us. From Psalm 121:5, “The Lord Himself watches over you!  The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.”  So let’s enjoy our time together, live in every moment, and trust God with the details.  And by all means, let’s forget what we look like in a bathing suit and take time to jump off the high dive!

Guarded by Peace

Use this for blogTrail headAs Christians, we’re called upon to be more like Jesus.  Most of the time, we do this by focusing on His love.  And that’s the right way to start.  Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-39, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your mind,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Those commandments are a big undertaking in any life, and we must continually pursue them, but today let’s focus on another character trait of Jesus.  The disciple Matthew tells a story about when  Jesus and the disciples were crossing over the Sea of Galilee.  He said in Matthew 8:24, “Without warning, a furious storm came up…”  Sound familiar?  Had any furious storms come up in your life?  Have any of them come without warning? In this case, the disciples panicked, and surprisingly, many of them were experienced fisherman!

Before we judge them too harshly, let’s look at our own response to storms:  worry, stress, anger.  Maybe all three?  But we are modeling our lives after Jesus, so we need to look at His response to storms.  The complete verse in Matthew 8:24 states, “Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat.  But Jesus was sleeping.”  Who does that?  Here’s the answer: The person who sleeps through the storms of life is a person at peace.  Jesus, despite all circumstances happening around Him, remained peaceful.  Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”  Despite the raging storms around him, Jesus remained at rest.

So let’s follow Jesus’ example and agree with Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, that transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  I don’t know about you, but I want my heart ‘guarded by peace’.

Digging In

Digging inWhen the military needs to dig in, they make foxholes.  These are considered ‘defensive fighting positions.’  When we go through tough times, we definitely need a fighting position.  Taking the militaries lead, we need to address two things regarding ‘digging in.’  First, we have to make the hole big enough.  We might think digging in means praying about the problem and asking others for prayer, and that certainly is part of it.  But remember, we have to make the whole big enough, so we must do even more.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 it says, Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  That is digging in.  Even when it’s tough, we must have joy, that happiness on the inside that no one can steal.  We need to keep praying and turning everything over to God.  Here’s an impossible challenge, we must be thankful right smack in the middle of the problem.  It is a deliberate act of the will to try to be thankful when someone has hurt you, or you lost your job, or you are living in constant pain.  But it is possible to give thanks when things aren’t going well.  Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With man this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.”  (Hint: Ask God to help you be thankful.) The second part of digging in is this: don’t make the hole so big you can’t crawl out.  If you only focus on your problem and never look beyond, you might stay down.

Expect that your life will get better.  God is the one you can trust to change it.  He said in Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?   I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”  Dig in, but keep watching for the new thing God is bringing to you.

You Are Not Alone

Seemingly from out of nowhere, a friend of mine had to take her mother to the hospital with serious health concerns.  She was fighting fluid around her lungs, extremely low blood pressure, and a serious life-threatening infection.  The family rode a roller coaster for days. There were moments when all hope seemed lost and times when they saw slight improvements.  Although the crisis was unexpected, the family ran straight to the only One who could help.  Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” It’s incredible that at this very moment her mom has been moved from the ICU Unit.  And thankfully, she plans to be home soon.

Challenges can blindside us too.  Unfortunately, our tendency is to close up and not reach out to the very place where we can get help.  Yet we have a perfect place to run!  In Zechariah it says, “Return to the place of safety, all you who still have hope!  I promise this very day that I will repay two blessings for each of your troubles.”  We can take that situation, that person, that problem-whatever it is, and grab onto God.  He wants to be our aide in times of trouble.  Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  When we’re in the middle of a situation that seems hopeless, let’s turn our focus to God.  He wants to help us, build us up, and give us strength.  Rest assured, we are never alone.

God’s Hour

cropped-IMG_1326-e1455226089616.jpgI recently read an article that made reference to ‘God’s Hour’.  It didn’t explain what that meant but it really intrigued me.  What if we chose to live in God’s Hour all the time? Our lives can get pretty complicated and we can be overwhelmed by all the junk that is thrown at us.  Problems in a relationship, a health crisis, financial woes, or job frustrations can ruin our day.  These are just a few of the things that cause us stress and fill our thoughts.

But Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”  If we internalize that, life gets a lot easier.  Here’s why: we don’t have to figure it all out.  That’s incredible!  We don’t have to figure out how to solve all the problems that arise in our day.  We can trust God to take care of them.  Sometimes the challenges are so big we don’t have a hope of fixing them on our own.  But unfortunately, we keep replaying them in our minds.  This is not a great way to live, fretting and worrying every day.

But trust this: God has our backs.  We sometimes look into the future and think things are never going to work out  for us but it says in Joshua 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a hope and a future.”   God is thinking about our future, and he is planning for it to be beautiful.  So why don’t we take each moment of our day and think of it as God’s Hour?  It will help us to unload all that junk that is clogging our minds.  As we release the worries of the day we can fill our minds with things that make us smile, bring us joy, and fill us with peace. And why not?  It’s God’s Hour.
