Don’t Quit Now, You Can Do This

I recently went to Paddle and Climb, a store in downtown Sandusky that rents paddleboards and kayaks, sells sporting equipment and clothes, and has a 32′ rock wall for climbing.  That was the purpose of my birthday outing with friends, to scale the wall, (‘Rocky’ music playing in your head right now would be appropriate).  Chad helped us that day and gave good advice, helpful tips, and encouragement along the way.  One rock face was particularly challenging for me, and I didn’t make it to the top.  When I was tired and ready to give up, Chad said, “Don’t quit now, you can do this.” He even climbed with me, encouraging me as I went.  With the support of my helpful guide, I successfully made it to the top.

The challenges we face in life can make us feel like quitting too.  But we don’t have to face any of them alone!  God wants to walk beside us: giving advice, helpful tips, and encouragement along the way.  The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame…” (Isaiah 58:11, NIV) When we’re not sure what to do next, we can listen for his voice.  “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'” (Isaiah 30:21, NIV) Sometimes we’re just tired and feel we don’t have what it takes to keep going.  God has a remedy for those days too. “The LORD gives strength to those who are weary. Even young people get tired, then stumble and fall. But those who trust the LORD will find new strength. They will be strong like eagles soaring upward on wings; they will walk and run without getting tired. ” (Isaiah 40:29-31, CEV) With the support of our helpful guide, we can keep going!

Let It Go

There are times in life when it’s best to take the advice of a popular Disney song and ‘Let It Go.’  My family had a large garage sale this weekend and we followed that mantra. We decided to stop holding on to things that we no longer needed.  Six different families contributed to the sale at my mom’s and tables were filled with kitchen items, house décor, and small appliances.  Outdoor and indoor furniture pieces were strategically placed in the driveway while adult clothes were draped in the garage. One entire area of the driveway was filled with everything baby: stroller, clothes, stuffed animals, and numerous musical toys.  Although the sale was a plethora of different items, they all had one thing in common: it was time for them to go.

Similarly, we have things in our personal lives that we need to let go.  We don’t have to hold onto worry, stress, pain, or fear.  We can choose to ‘let it go.’  C.S. Lewis said, “Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars.  You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.” Letting go of worry and fear allows us to step into a future filled with strength and courage.  “The righteous shall move onward and forward; those with pure hearts shall become stronger and stronger.”  (Job 17:9) We can give it all to God.  When we hand it over, He carries the heavy load for us.  1 Peter 5:7, “Since God cares for you, let Him carry all your burden and worries.”  Let’s clean out all the thoughts that clutter our minds and weigh us down. However, let’s keep the treasures.  Lastly, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.” (Philippians 4:8)

Straight Towards the Light

My class walked to the library early this morning in a light rain with warm air.  Since we weren’t dealing with a cold wind and pelting, unforgiving rain, it was a bit of an adventure.  About an hour later, however, everything changed.  The next class walked in a thick fog with significantly colder air.  That walk to the library wasn’t enjoyable; we put our heads down and marched determinedly on.  Thankfully, the cool and damp air was soon forgotten in the light and warmth of the library.

Life has a way of throwing unwanted surprises at us too.  One minute we’re walking along just fine and in the next instant we are facing a sickness, a loss, or a challenge that seems too much to bear.  But similar to the library, we can look to the Light for rescue.  Jesus said, “I am the world’s Light; no one who follows Me stumbles around in the darkness.  I provide plenty of light to live in.”  (John 8:12)  Truth be told, we can have shelter from every storm. “For He will hide me in His shelter in time of trouble, He will conceal me in the cover of His tent; and set me high upon a rock.”  (Psalm 27:5)  We don’t have to be afraid on the dark days, because we are protected.  “God is our refuge and strength, a tested help in times of trouble.  And so we need not fear even if the world blows up and the mountains crumble into the sea.” In the middle of a storm? Put your head down and walk straight towards the Light, because once you step in, you’ll be surrounded by God’s warmth and protection.

Spring Ahead

Not surprisingly, we’ve had another shift in weather in northwest Ohio.  We had fierce winds the other night and those winds left behind colder temperatures and an obvious chill in the air.  My furnace is running constantly, trying to keep up with the sudden change.  Despite the cold, when I look out my windows the sun is shining brightly.  And even though there was snow on the ground this morning, I can see the tiniest buds sneaking out on the branches of the trees in my yard.  Spring is on the way.

How many of us, through trials and challenges, have felt like winter has come to stay?  Who’s looking for a change in your circumstances; who’s hoping for spring?  We have assurance that the tough times in our lives are not going to last.  “See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.  Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.” (Song of Solomon 2:11-12)  We don’t need to look at all the things around us that aren’t perfect, we can fix our eyes on the things that give us hope.  “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.”  (Proverbs 4:25)  Our circumstances will try to hold us back; however, God leads us forward to  beautiful pathways.  “You’re blessed when you stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God.  You’re best when you follow His directions, doing your best t0 find Him. (Psalm 119:1-2)  The Earth is still moving around the sun, so let’s keep moving too.  Let’s leave winter behind and walk into the new season God has planned for us.

Amazingly Possible

When I’m in a Zumba class, sometimes I don’t think I’ll make it all the way to the end.  I’ll cruise through the warm-up, make it through 3 or 4 songs, and then somewhere in the middle I question my sanity for being there.  (To be completely honest, there have been people who have questioned my sanity in other areas of my life, but that’s another story…) I know I’m not alone in my exhaustion, because I see people glancing at the clock and peeking at their watches.  Just when I’m thinking of an excuse to sneak out of class, I hear my favorite words, “Last song.”  It’s amazing how that changes my attitude.  Instead of quitting, I finished!

In the testing times of life, you can keep going too.  God is right there with you, giving you strength.  Isaiah 40:28-31, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” You can get through this.  Your current challenge may seem insurmountable, but God has brilliant ways to deal with the impossible.  Jesus said, “All things are possible for him who believes.” (Mark 9:23) So take some advice from Moses, who knew a thing or two about impossible situations, “Don’t be afraid.  Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today.” (Exodus 14:13)

Hope is Nearby

The weather in this part of Ohio has been unusually warm for this time of year.  Normally we experience temperatures in the 20’s and 30’s with various amounts of snow and wind.  But this week brought open windows and fresh air, culminating with a day of sunshine and 70 degrees.  People couldn’t help slipping into t-shirts and heading outside.  Spirits lifted as the gray days of winter seemed to fade away.  Unfortunately, the temperatures dropped and the winds picked up overnight, and flying by my window right now I see snow.  It can be a little discouraging to feel spring so close only to have it snatched right back.  But guess what?  As the wind sways the trees and snow sprinkles my landscaping, peeking out of the soil is a spring flower.  Do you know it’s name?  It’s called hope.

Our lives can tell a similar tale.  Sometimes all we see around us is the wind and the cold, but trust this, hope is nearby.  “And you will have confidence, because there is hope; you will be protected and take your rest in safety.  You will lie down, and no one will make you afraid; many will entreat your favor.”  (Job 11:18-19)  We don’t have to fret and pace when things around us look bad.  Instead, we can trust God is planning to come and help.  Psalm 62:5, “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him.”  Be brave and hold fast, because this season is going to end.  “I believe that I shall look upon the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”  (Psalm 27: 13-14) Despite what it’s front of you, stand strong.   And regardless of the lingering days of winter, keep hoping, because spring is sneaking up everywhere.

That’s a Promise

There’s always a little uncertainty about winter weather in Ohio.  One forecast calls for tons of snow; another predicts we will have little snow but frigid temperatures.  Quite frankly, I just want to know if I should be preparing my ‘snow-shoveling muscles.’  (I’m not even sure if I have any.  I wonder if I can buy them on Amazon?)  A few years back I remember opening my garage door and having the snow reach my shoulders, which completely ended the thought of going anywhere, and totally changed all plans for that day.  Is it too much to ask what to expect?  Is it too much to want to get ready for any contingency?

Sometimes the future feels like that too-total uncertainty.  We just want to know what’s coming so we can be prepared.  Fortunately, there is a way to get ready for the unknowns that are ahead of us. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding; In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”  (Proverbs 3:5-6)  Let’s be honest, we’re all going to face challenges in this coming year, but knowing we don’t have to face them alone should erase our fears.  Since God is always with us, we can remain steadfast. “Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)   Clearly, we can’t predict what tomorrow will bring, but we do have an absolute  guarantee.  From Isaiah 43:2, “I will be with you.”   Let this sink into your heart: You are not going to face even one minute of your future alone; and that, my friend, is a promise.

Walk in Strength

The wind is blowing fiercely today on the eve of the New Year.  Maybe Mother Nature wants to make a parting statement when the rest of the world is simply looking forward to a new beginning.  A meteorologist  could explain where the wind gets its strength, but he probably couldn’t tell us where to get it when we need it.  If the previous year left you tired, a little broken and on your knees, there is a place you can go to refuel.

In the New Year, you can stand strong, face forward, and expect a bright future.  “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.” (Isaiah 40:28)  When you get exhausted from the battles that surround you, take them straight to God.  THIS is where you can build an inner strength to allow you to remain standing in the storms of life. “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:29-31) As you think about your New Year’s resolutions, determine to give God all of your cares from last year.  Ralph Waldo Emerson said it well, “Write it on your heart that everyday is the best day in the year…This new day is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on the yesterdays.” May you walk in strength today, expecting that today is going to be quite wonderful.

Follow the Light

mountain-road-1556177_1280The wind was at my back today as I set out for a ride on the trail.   With the sun in my face and a bright blue sky above me, my attitude soared with each passing mile.   Fall’s splendor surrounded me in gorgeous displays of color.  When I made the turn to come home however, the ride became decidedly harder. It seemed like everything conspired against me to keep me from my destination: the wind at my face, fatigue, and a steady rise in the road.  I wanted to stop and rest but instead I put my head down, pushed on, and hoped to make it to my house as soon as possible.  Then suddenly it happened, I turned onto my street, and I was never happier to see my driveway leading me into my home.

Do you have a battle you are facing?  Does it seem like everything is conspiring against you?   With God’s help, you CAN get through it.  He is going to make a way.  From Isaiah 45:2, “I will go before you and level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron.”  Remember, you’re not facing this challenge alone.  God says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  When the opposition is at its strongest, keep your focus trained on the One who is standing ready to help.  “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you…”  (Deuteronomy 31:8) Even with the winds of adversity against you, this problem will not stop you. Just keep following the Light, because it’s leading you straight home.

Standing in the Storm

304475_10151253739365067_139629285_n-tomb-of-unknown-soldierIf I want a picture of steadfastness, I know where to go.  The Sentinels who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. fit the picture.  They protect the tomb in every kind of weather-including torrential rains, blizzards, and Washington’s relentlessly hot summers.  The Sentinels are completely dedicated to their mission-guarding and ‘watching the back’ of the unknown soldier.  The Society of the Honor Guard reports:  “It gets cold, it gets hot and the mission continues as it has unbroken since 1937.” Just imagine, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every minute of every day and every minute of every night, standing firm.  The Sentinels exemplify Corinthians 4:2,  “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.”

Most of us would never volunteer to stand in a snowstorm for 8 hours.  However, we all have times in our lives when we need to be steadfast; many areas of our lives require it.  Can we keep going in the tough times?  It won’t be easy, but we can do it, because we don’t have to do it alone.  From Isaiah 41:13, “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.'” You might be surprised to know you can even stay calm during the storms of life. “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.  Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord Himself, is the Rock eternal.” (Isaiah 26:3-4) From 1 Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm.  Let nothing move you.” If it’s storming in your world, You CAN stand firm.  Just be sure to grab a really large umbrella, because you won’t be standing alone.
