It’s Coming Together

It's Coming Together
Feeling puzzled? Don’t worry, it’s coming together…

My mom likes to put challenging 1,000 piece puzzles together.  When she dumps a box out I can’t help but think it will never come together; it’s just a jumbled mess that doesn’t look like anything promising.  And yet each time I check in, it’s coming together.  She had one with old-fashioned Christmas ornaments all hanging on blue beads.  Another one was a solid picture of sprinkled and frosted doughnuts which, quite honestly, just made me hungry.  A recent puzzle was shelves of books and their many titles.   With patience, little by little, a picture begins to form.   It doesn’t happen overnight and mom has to keep working at it, but each time the final picture eventually comes together.

Trust the Timing

Unfortunately, sometimes life can be a complicated puzzle.  It just seems like a bunch of events that produce nothing but problems and chaos.  But take heart, God is working in your life right now to bring it all together.  From Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.  He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”   God had you on His radar for a long time.  Psalm 139:16-17, “You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.  How precious are your thoughts about me God!  They cannot be numbered!”  Grab ahold of this thought-you are always on God’s mind.  He’s looking at all the seemingly impossible parts of your life and He’s fitting them together to create something beautiful.  So stay steadfast and keep watching, because you can be sure, it’s coming together.

Timing is Everything

Spring flowers on a garden path...
Timing is Everything

It’s that time of year when I realize it won’t  be long before I’ll be mowing the lawn on a regular basis. The bumps in the yard right now make me feel like I’m walking across a rocky terrain.  Seriously, sometimes the ground is so uneven I think I should be wearing ankle protection.  As I was pondering what to do about the rough ground, I saw a man rolling my neighbor’s yard, so I went and asked him to take care of my lawn too.  It was a heavy  lawn roller and really did the trick on my uneven ground.  Apparently, timing is everything because the owner said springtime is the perfect time to do it.  So perhaps the ankle protection should go back to the store…

God knows quite a bit about timing too.  As we are rushing to get through the problems in our lives we forget to recognize at that very minute God is going ahead of us and continually works on them .   “We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for his purpose.” (Romans 8:28, CEV)  When we’re pleading for an end to our problems, God is calmly smoothing out the road before us.  When we’re thinking this is an impossible situation and nothing will ever change, changes are happening.  God is secretly preparing good things for us.   “I will go before you and level the uneven places; I will shatter the bronze doors and cut the iron bars in two. I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches from secret places…” (Isaiah 45:3-4, HCSB) Sometimes we forget that timing is everything, but God never forgets.  “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11, NIV)

Stay in this Season

Stay in this Season: A bench with fall leaves.
Stay in this Season

Is my calendar correct?  It says the month is September but when I go shopping I see workers putting out Christmas decorations.  I don’t know about you, but I plan to stay in this season.  Fall is my favorite time of year, (don’t get me wrong, Christmas is my favorite holiday, but I’ll happily wait until December to celebrate it). I like so many things about autumn: the colorful leaves, the ‘sweatshirt’ weather, Ohio State football games, and big, crackling bonfires.  I’m sure I could even list a dozen more.  But even if the retail market is trying to push me into the next season, I am going to cherish the moments in this one.

Even without the stores trying to dictate our calendars, we get ahead of ourselves.  We look at tomorrow and forget to live in today.  God planned this very day for us.  “This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.”  (Psalm 118:24 NLT) It’s good to look ahead, but there’s also value in this day. Admittedly, some days are tougher than others.  We’d like to run through the difficult and frustrating days.  But those days serve a purpose too.  They make us stronger and help us learn patience.  We must hold fast to this truth: God has perfect timing. “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under Heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 ESV) On the rough days of life, let’s remember the good things we have in our lives.  Let’s be thankful for the many ways God has been faithful to us.  “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” (1 Chronicles 16:34 NLT) It’s that time of year again when the season is changing. But instead of looking ahead to the next one, let’s stay in this season and see what the harvest brings.

Question: What can you thank God for in this season?
