You’re Stronger Than You Think

Mountains with Evergreen Trees: You're Stronger Than You Think
You’re Stronger Than You Think

The first step in building a house is making sure the foundation is strong. When my youngest brother was building his house, we all went to help the day the basement walls were to be poured. As it turned out, there had been heavy rains the day before and the cement truck had to stay in the driveway.  That complicated things because the chute wasn’t long enough for the cement to pour the farthest walls. This meant the cement had to be carried in 5 gallon buckets by manpower, or in my case, womanpower.  It turns out I was stronger than I thought.  The cement guy filled the buckets and handed them to us, I lugged mine across the wide expanse of the floor, perhaps a bit slower than the men. Even though the task was difficult, pulling on my inner strength kept me going.

Life has a way of sending us unexpected burdens.  Things can come at us that seem impossible to face; but we are stronger than we think.  As we rely on the strength of God, our inner resilience rises.  This allows us to face the difficult days and remain standing.  “The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, And makes me walk on my high places.” (Habakkuk 3:19 NASB)  God gives us the ability to face the tough days, not barely making it, but standing steadfast in the storm.  We can persevere even when the storms are coming against us; we’ve got what it takes to hang in there.  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm…” (Ephesians 6:10-11 NASB) Even on the tough days, let’s keep standing, because we’re stronger than we think.

Things to do today:

  1. Ask God to increase your strength to face the day.

You’ve Got This!

You've got this. Runner on a forest trail.
Runner on a forest path

Driving out of my subdivision, I saw some runners from Anytime Fitness. Most people had completed the marked path but I saw one woman struggling to finish. I could tell she was tired as she moved with slumped shoulders, each step a fight to keep moving. Although she was running alone, others from the gym moved in her direction to cheer her on. I couldn’t hear what they were saying but I imagine it went something like this: “You’ve got this!” “Keep going, you’re almost there!”  “You can do it!” As I turned off my street, I lost sight of the action from the gym.  Even though I didn’t witness it, I believe the last runner completed the course.  She ran with a voice in her head saying, “You’ve got this!”

Too many times we face trials in life that make us want to quit.  But God is saying, “You’ve got this!” Although the world would push us down, God has many ways to pull us up.   “Don’t be afraid, because I’m with you; don’t be anxious, because I am your God.  I keep on strengthening you; I’m truly helping you.  I’m surely upholding you with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 ISV) God knows what to do with the things that come against us.  “Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in power.  Your right hand, O Lord, smashes the enemy.” (Exodus 15:6 NLT) When we have a destination in mind and every obstacle known to man is blocking us, we know where to turn.  Let’s point our running shoes towards a place of protection.  “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”  (Psalm 46:1 ESV) In this perfect sanctuary we catch our breath, square our shoulders, and keep moving towards our goals.  And if we listen very carefully, we’ll hear him say, “You’ve got this!”

Despite the Obstacles-Keep Going

Lush waterfalls keep going over rocksAlthough waterfalls face constant opposition, they just keep going. My friends and I saw dozens of them on our trip to Maui, each unique and breathtaking in their own right. One thing the waterfalls had in common: they all had to push through obstacles to reach the zenith of their destiny.  One waterfall was hidden deep in the woods where tree branches and rocks in the river fought to slow the cascade.  Another time, we hiked 2 miles through a bamboo forest to see the determined descent of a mountain’s waterfall.  Others climbed over boulders, fought past rocky ledges, and crashed around manmade obstructions.  Nonetheless, they all kept going, displaying their beauty and their strength.

Each of us have dreams and goals just waiting to be fulfilled. Unfortunately, there are obstacles that get in our way too.  And yet, we don’t face them in our own power. “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13 WEB) It can be overwhelming to face repeated setbacks.  Delays in our plans cause frustration.  Constant battles wear us out.  But God helps us in these situations. “He gives strength to those who are tired; to the ones who lack power, he gives renewed energy…But those who wait for the Lord’s help find renewed strength; they rise up as if they had eagle’s wings, they run without growing weary, they walk without getting tired.” (Isaiah 40: 29,31 NET) We each have a destiny to fulfill, a carved out niche in our little corner of the world.  There are going to be situations, setbacks, and even people who try to stop our forward progress.  “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT) In God’s strength we keep going through every obstacle.  In God’s goodness our future becomes beautiful.
