Don’t Let Your Guard Down

My brother owns a contracting business that largely centers around land restoration.  Because I work with him, I’ve been in some pretty interesting places and done some pretty interesting things.  I’ve worn waders and walked across a wetland, rode a 4 wheeler while ‘spraying the edges’ at a controlled burn, and unfortunately got a Ranger stuck in a very wet marsh, more than once!  I’ve planted hundreds of trees, walked through weeds that were way over my head, and sprayed herbicide from a punt boat my brother was ferrying.  However, my favorite activity is caring for the trees in our tree farm.  But one time this summer, I wasn’t in the tree farm for over two weeks.  Upon returning, it was overrun with 3-4′ weeds!  It didn’t take me long to realize you can’t let your guard down when you’re caring for trees.

We Have to Guard our Thoughts!

This is also true in our thinking.  We have to guard our thoughts.  The world comes at us hard: it is constantly giving us something to worry about.  However, we don’t have to listen! Romans 12:2 (ESV) states,  “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”  When everything seems hopeless , we must  fill our minds with something hopeful.  Isaiah 26:3 (ESV) states: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Did you catch that? PERFECT PEACE. We can believe God when He says, “I will be your God throughout your lifetime—
until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you.” (Isaiah 46:4, NLT)

Pick up the Good Stuff

Why is it that whenever I run into Wal Mart with only one item needed I walk out with a cart full of things? Seriously, I go from a $10.00 item to spending over $100.00.  It’s crazy, or ‘cray cray’ as my niece would say.  The problem is I pick up things as I walk along, many times without much thought.  I grab this and a little of that, and stock up here and refill something there…where does it stop?  Let’s not even talk about the grocery section, because one item will always become 20.  (I am not going to mention the things I grab when I walk into the store hungry…it’s not pretty…actually, I should probably just go undercover when this happens.)  Needless to say, it would be better if I left all the ‘quick grab’ items and only picked up the good stuff.

Every one of us, as we journey through each day, ‘pick up’ things that are better left alone.  Often it’s when we interact with others.  They may be angry, negative, or feeling defeated.  Instead of just supporting them, we inadvertently take on and internalize their emotions.  It’s not healthy to carry that negativity around all day.   Instead, when we are thinking about the difficult situations our friends and co-workers face, we need to renew our minds, to: ‘think good thoughts‘ as my friend Sarah would say.  Then our rough day gets transformed into a brighter day.  “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” (Romans 12:2, NLT) Let’s make a decision to keep our days positive, to pay attention to what we ‘pick up’.  “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8, NIV)

  1. Count your blessings.  Take time to think of the good things that are in your life.

What Are You Thinking?

What are you thinking?

I’ve been redecorating my bedroom and I’m not sure it will ever get done.  I can only hope that I’ll get my act together and finish.  What was I thinking? My problem is when I change one thing, like the bedspread, it makes me think about changing something else, like the color of the walls.  Then I think about the artwork and the curtains.  Can you see where this is going?  Actually, the bedrooms almost done, but the master bath needs an update too-although that shouldn’t take too long.  But I’m thinking that room should be painted too…hmm…

Unlike us, Jesus doesn’t have any indecisive thoughts.   It’s very clear, we don’t think the way he does.  “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” (Isaiah 55:8, NLT) When we’re thinking about our troubles, he’s thinking about peace.  “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIT) When we’re thinking about our weakness, he’s thinking about power.  “Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NLT) When we’re thinking ‘It’s hopeless’, he’s thinking about hope. For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11, NLT) When we’re thinking about surviving, he’s thinking about thriving.  “I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. ” (John 10:10, NET) Jesus’ thoughts are hope-filled, over flowing with goodness and life.  With that in mind-what are you thinking?

It’s Time to Change the Station

I wish I would have know it was time to change the station when I couldn’t fall asleep the other night.  Instead, I started thinking  negative thoughts about myself and didn’t quit.  ‘I could have done more to help a student,  I should have called a friend the day before, I should have watched what I said to someone…’ The list of my problems went on and on.  According to my nighttime musings, I couldn’t do anything right.  But instead of trying to think of something else, I let the negativity play over and over in my mind.   Although my thoughts weren’t doing me any good,  I stayed on that station for hours, eventually falling into a restless sleep.

We live in a negative world, and it’s easy to get caught up in it. But that’s not God’s desire for us.  God wants us to continually renew our minds.  Renewing our minds means we let go of all the lies that hold us back and grab hold of the truth. “Don’t become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants—what is good, pleasing, and perfect.” (Romans 12:2, GWT)   God wants us to live a positive and uplifting life. And because he lives inside us, we can overcome negativity.  “For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7, NHEB)

Let’s replace the dark thoughts with good thoughts-ones that bring peace, joy, and strength.  “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (Philippians 4:8, NIV) When the thoughts we’re having are all negative, that means it’s time to change the station.

Stay in Peace

Friday evening I found myself in Cleveland traffic during rush hour.  What was I thinking?  This I knew: I needed to stay in peace.  People were definitely in a hurry. There were speedy drivers switching lanes like they were in a Nascar race.   Some drivers pushed for the outside lane and others flew in from the onramp.  I wasn’t in the mood for a  race and dodging the incoming traffic also seemed like a crazy choice.  So I went with the flow: I ignored the cars that zipped through all three lanes, didn’t worry about the stop and go in the right hand lane, and steered clear of the fast lane.  My drive to Pennsylvania in the middle lane that night was so much easier when I didn’t worry about what everyone else was doing.  Keeping my peace (and singing at the top of my lungs) made the drive a pleasant one.

We need to keep our peace at all times.  When we spend our days  worrying about what everyone else is doing, we lose our peace.  Let’s face it, people often do things that upset us, annoy us, or make us angry.  We need to stay focused on God so we can stay in peace.  “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isaiah 26:3 NLT) Wouldn’t we like to sit down and have our bodies and our minds at rest?  Troubling thoughts bring us down.  They are too heavy to carry alone. THAT’S when we need to turn our thinking over to the one who can handle it all.  Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 GWT) Wouldn’t it be nice to sit and relax without any worries?  Let’s stop the overthinking, because I’m pretty sure the couch is calling…

Hold onto the Good

My youngest brother, Bob, is a charter boat captain on Lake Erie.  Most days you’ll find him on the lake with groups of eager fishermen ready for a day of fun.  They’re fishing for walleye and yellow perch.  However, the white perch, invasive to Lake Erie, gets caught too.  This was the case when Bob took my family fishing.  I was amazed at the dozens of times a white perch was on someone’s line.  My brother, who’s an expert in his field, knew exactly what to do.  He’d unhook the offensive fish and immediately drop it back in the water; the large walleye was dropped into the ice cooler.  Bob knew to hold onto the good and let go of the bad.

That’s exactly what we need to do with our thoughts: hold onto the good and let go of the bad.  Too many times we let worries and fears fill our thoughts.  “Can any one of you by worrying add a single day to your life? So do not worry , saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. ” (Matthew 6:27; 31; 33 NIV) God is always with us; therefore, we don’t have to be afraid. “Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV) We can hold on to the good thoughts that remind us God is on our side.  “Do not fear!  Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which he will accomplish for you today…the Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.” (Exodus 14:13-14 NASB) Remember, we don’t have to keep anything negative. Instead, we can hold onto the good.

Go a Little Higher

One day I saw a vent cover from the roof lying in my yard.  Thinking it would be a two minute fix, I decided to put it back on myself.  This involved lugging a 6′ ladder out back, climbing it, and carefully crawling Spiderman-style on the first level of my roof.  The second level was trickier.  To get on that level, I had to take a running start like a gymnast flying towards the pommel horse.  (Some advice:Stay away from visualizing this one.) The third level was a steep incline where I literally slid down to get to my destination.  Ironically, when I reached the vent I realized IT DIDN’T NEED A COVER!  After all that climbing, I discovered that some vents were covered but others were not.   Looking around, I could tell that this one belonged to my neighbor.  Things got clearer when I went a little higher.

Likewise, when life gets messy, it helps to go a little higher.  Instead of thinking about our problems, we can focus on God.  “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:2) Sometimes the problems that come at us don’t seem to have a solution.  But God is an expert in difficult situations!  When the disciples thought they encountered the impossible, “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but not with God.  For all things are possible with God.'” (Matthew 19:26) He promises to take care of our needs.  “And my God will supply all of your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4:19)  He meets ALL of our needs-completely, fully, entirely, absolutely.  Problems?  Challenges?  Stress? Give it all to God.  For when we go a little higher, we realize He can handle anything and everything.  “This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord.” (2 Kings 3:18)

 

Let It Go

There are times in life when it’s best to take the advice of a popular Disney song and ‘Let It Go.’  My family had a large garage sale this weekend and we followed that mantra. We decided to stop holding on to things that we no longer needed.  Six different families contributed to the sale at my mom’s and tables were filled with kitchen items, house décor, and small appliances.  Outdoor and indoor furniture pieces were strategically placed in the driveway while adult clothes were draped in the garage. One entire area of the driveway was filled with everything baby: stroller, clothes, stuffed animals, and numerous musical toys.  Although the sale was a plethora of different items, they all had one thing in common: it was time for them to go.

Similarly, we have things in our personal lives that we need to let go.  We don’t have to hold onto worry, stress, pain, or fear.  We can choose to ‘let it go.’  C.S. Lewis said, “Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars.  You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.” Letting go of worry and fear allows us to step into a future filled with strength and courage.  “The righteous shall move onward and forward; those with pure hearts shall become stronger and stronger.”  (Job 17:9) We can give it all to God.  When we hand it over, He carries the heavy load for us.  1 Peter 5:7, “Since God cares for you, let Him carry all your burden and worries.”  Let’s clean out all the thoughts that clutter our minds and weigh us down. However, let’s keep the treasures.  Lastly, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.” (Philippians 4:8)

A Healthy Choice

Sitting in an airport in the early morning hours is a perfect place to people watch.  You can see all walks of humanity, and they come with a plethora of moods and a multitude of attitudes.  Watching kids is especially entertaining because they are not stressed with traveling; they are dancing in the open areas, climbing on chairs, and giggling from the sheer joy of living.  The adults however, often have a harried look.  I lazily watched the craziness of the airport until I was unexpectedly thrust into the fray when tornadoes derailed most of the flights to my connecting airport.  What should I do?  Based on what I was witnessing, I had options.  I could yell, throw a tantrum, or get angry at the airline personnel.  But how could that possibly help the situation?   There simply HAS to be a better way.

Actually, adding a little ‘fruit’ to my diet during this trying time would be a perfect response.  From Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  When life gets messy, let’s not take our frustrations out on the people around us, but instead, let’s choose to be kind.  Otis Redding used to sing, “Try a little tenderness…”  Even when the situation is out of control, we don’t have to be“Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” (Proverbs 3:3) It’s good to remember that everyone is fighting some kind of battle.  We can deliberately choose to live a lifestyle where we build each other up.  “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor…”  (Romans 12:10)  When things aren’t going the way you want them to, do something just for you. Grab some fruit, because that’s always a healthy choice.

 

 

 

 

God is in the Details

Burnt rolls, undercooked roast beef, and runny casserole.  What do they have in common?  They happened in my kitchen, when I was cooking.  Although up for debate, my biggest blunder happened when I was a preteen.  My family was going to be surprised with my chocolate chip cookies. I was pretty impressed with myself as I took the cookies out of the oven.  Proudly I carried  them into the living room to share with my brothers and they enthusiastically grabbed them.  However, their groans, cries of distress, and strong words, (I am deliberately leaving those words out), caused me great confusion.  Apparently, substituting salt for sugar in a recipe is a bad idea.  Who would have thought a cup of salt could make such a fuss? I guess I should have been paying better attention to the details.

Fortunately, God keeps a close watch on His ‘projects.’  From the start, He was always watching over us. “You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” (Psalm 139:16)  He doesn’t wander off and think about other things like I do.  Genesis 28:15, “What’s more, I am with you, and will protect you wherever you go…I will be with you constantly until I have finished giving you all I am promising.” And let’s face it, He’s promising a lot!  He’s arranging things in our favor.  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  (Jeremiah 29:11)  Unlike me, God is always paying attention.  When He starts something, you know it’s going to be simply amazing.  After all, the details are His specialty.
