A Good, Good Father

sunset-690083_1280I’m thankful for family.  I’m thankful for the sense of belonging, for the closeness, and for the coming together in tough times.  My family lost someone we love this week: a loving husband, a great father, and a fun filled grandpa.  It’s not easy to say goodbye.  It helps to remember the times we spent together and the many ways he made life enjoyable.  My dad was always teasing us, playing little jokes, saying outrageous things to get a reaction.  He had a great sense of humor and was able to laugh at almost anything.  We loved him for that.  Mere words could never capture the essence of my dad, but he was someone I admired, someone I loved, and is someone I will miss dearly.  I’m thankful for the time we had together.

Our God is a good, good Father.  He has so many good things planned for us.  “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…”  (James 1:17)  One of His perfect gifts: love.  It was always His plan for love to be strong.  In 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, “Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.   Love does not delight in evil  but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails.” And continuing to 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now these things remain: faith, hope, and love.  But the greatest of these is love.” So let’s follow the lead of our Heavenly Father, and love one another deeply, cherishing the time we have together, and creating memories that last a lifetime.  I’m thankful for the perfect gift of love.

In a Small Town

massachusetts-1813240_1280I’m thankful I live in a small town.  Most of the people in a small town will never make the national news, but that doesn’t stop them from making a difference in the lives of the people around them.  By leading with their hearts, they change their corner of the world. Recently, there was a family who lost their home and possessions to a house fire.  The school district came together and donated appliances, furniture, household items, and bags and bags filled with clothes for all members of the family.  Another town put together a Thanksgiving food bank for those who couldn’t afford to make that dinner for their families.  Many churches are packing Christmas shoeboxes full of presents to be sent to needy children around the world.  High school students are collecting items for the Ronald McDonald House, and middle school  students are collecting canned goods for a local food bank.  The list of giving goes on and on.

Perhaps these small town hearts are following the perfect model: Jesus. He came from the small town of Nazareth and constantly gave of Himself to others. “Jesus went about doing good…” (Acts 10:29)  God has always had a heart for the less fortunate.  He said, “For there will never cease to be poor in the land.  Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.'”  (Deuteronomy  15:11)  Additionally, from Acts 20:35, “…remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than receive.'”  Watching the news can make you believe that the world is a selfish and hopeless place, but that’s a lie.  Kindness, generosity, and hope are all around you.   And that’s the truth from a small town girl with a big heart.

A Glorious Unfolding

amazing-736885_1280I’m thankful for the beauty in nature.  Psalm 96:11-12 says, “Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it.  Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.”  That’s a great idea-to celebrate God’s creation.   I’ve been blessed to travel to a number of amazing places in the United States and it’s impossible to pinpoint a favorite.  Northern California with its vistas overlooking the sparkling waters of the Pacific, Lake Tahoe’s mountain views surrounded by gigantic pine trees, and the majestic mountains of Yosemite National Park are breathtaking.  Seeing waterfalls flow down a river in Virginia, watching a sunrise fill the Grand Canyon, and hiking in the Green Mountains of Vermont are awe-inspiring.  The list goes on and on and in each is seen the handiwork of God.

Psalm 19:1 attests to God’s creativity.  “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”  We don’t have to travel far to see the wonder of creation.  We can walk outside on any night and marvel at the moon and stars. “Look up to the heavens.  Who created all the stars?  He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of His great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26)  It’s mind boggling, isn’t it?  One lifetime isn’t enough to see all the beauty God has prepared for us to enjoy.  So begin immediately to look out, look around, and look up-because God’s masterpiece is always gloriously unfolding.

He Restores My Soul

bridge-1276180_1920I’m thankful for weekends.  I have a great job that I enjoy and get incredible satisfaction from doing, but there’s something to be said for a little ‘downtime’.  The weekend may bring time with family, time with friends, or time with the washer and dryer. It could be filled with errands or filled with chores at home.  But there’s a particular part of the weekend I always look forward to: the time of rest.  Weekdays have meetings, deadlines, and demands, but the weekend-that’s the time to breathe.  On the weekend I’m hooked up to a battery charger; the downtime gives me the energy to start another week.  I’m grateful for time off and a little rest.

However, we don’t need a weekend to get a break from the stress of life.  We have a place to rest everyday.  Jesus said, “Come to me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you.  Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy to bear, and my burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 28-30)  God will willingly take your burdens, and He knows exactly what you need.  From Psalm 23:2-3, “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul…”  Restores my soul… picture a gentle stream flowing through a lush forest; then just breathe.  “But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor misfortune.” (1 Kings 5:4) Remember this, it doesn’t matter what day is on your calendar,  because God’s calendar says today you can rest.

Heavenly Light

forest-984413_1920Early in the morning as I drive to work each day, I see someone walking their dog.  It’s pitch black outside, and more than a little chilly that time of day, and yet someone is faithfully walking the family pet.  The best part about seeing the pair is watching as the flashlight being carried carves a path of light in the darkness.  Every step their feet, (and paws), takes is illuminated by one small flashlight.  “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1:5)

As we move throughout our days we encounter areas where everything seems dark.  But Jesus gave us a promise we can hold onto.  “When Jesus spoke again to the people He said, ‘I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'” (John 8:12) That’s a pretty good deal: the light of life.  There’s security in knowing we have light for everyday of our lives. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)  Helen Keller said, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.” So its seems we have a choice, we can choose light.

What is light anyways? It’s a river flowing with all the good things God wants in our lives: love, joy, peace, and kindness, and so much more…  God has an abundance of light planned just for you. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…” (James 1:17)  Don’t ever be distracted by the shadows around you, God’s ‘flashlight’ is fully charged, so you can always see your way in the dark.

Choose Life

forest-1450895_1920-fall-bridgeAs  a teacher, I need certain credentials on my resume.  An employer would be interested in my knowledge of curriculum, instructional practices, and classroom management and discipline.  On the other hand, two of my brothers are carpenters and their resumes look incredibly different from mine. I’m sure they wouldn’t be the least bit interested in state standards.  And trust me, you don’t want me holding a power tool.  (Let’s just say there may have been a time when damage was done…) There’s definitely a skillset to every profession.

So I couldn’t help thinking, God doesn’t need a resume. He is perfectly qualified to do multiple jobs simultaneously.  Here’s one: Store Manager. “The Lord will open for you His good storehouse, the Heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand.” (Deuteronomy 28:12) Here’s two from Psalm 23: Counselor and Chef. “He guides me along the right path for His name sake,” and “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”  Another job: Physician.  “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3) Next job: teacher. “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and  understanding.”  (Proverbs 2:6) Here’s another: Secret Service Agent. “The Lord will keep you from all harm-He will watch over your life. (Psalm 127:1)

God’s job titles are too numerous to recount.  But there’s one that can never be left off any list: Savior.  “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)  His qualifications speak for themselves, everything you ever needed can be found in Christ Jesus.  Simply stated: choose life.

Joy in the Morning

sunbeam-1555249_1920-sunriseHave you ever tried to restore an old piece of furniture?  It’s not easy. This summer my niece found an old beat-up dresser at a barn sale.  Somehow that old dusty, paint-peeling specimen of furniture found its way into my garage.  The first thing I did was wipe the cobwebs and dust it off to see what it looked like underneath, (not a lot better, truth be told).  The hinges were crooked, the paint was peeling, and some of the handles were missing.  So I scraped, sanded, and scrubbed it; then began the slow process of painting it layer by layer.  It took awhile and I had to backtrack a few times, but today the sparkling white dresser sits in my niece’s bedroom with shiny new handles and a whole new outlook on life.

Perhaps there are areas in your life that need attention: old scars, difficult memories, pain too deep to be seen.  God sees every single thing that brings you down.  “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”  (Psalm 147:3)  In Jeremiah 30:17 it says, “For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord.”  God’s heart is for you.   From Isaiah 61:7, “Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance.  And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.” God wants to bring change to all the broken places in your life, and everything He touches becomes beautiful.  So take heart, my friend,  “Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5)

Treasure Hunting

My 2 year old nephew Benjamin is fascinated by the leaves blowing in the trees and the wind coming through the doorway.  When I told him it was just the wind he said, “What’s that?”  (I’d like to say I gave him an impressive, scholarly answer but my first response was “Uh…Well…Hmm…”) How do you explain what you can’t see?  Here’s what you do,  show the evidence.  I bought him a giant blue pinwheel and we watched it spin, we looked at the swaying trees in the yard, and we watched the wind move the clouds.  Even though we explored the concept, the wind still remained a bit of a mystery.  But the evidence confirmed its existence, so we absolutely believed it was there.

Our faith in God is like that.  We can’t actually see God here on earth, but just like the wind, there is proof of Him all around us.  Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”  We see Him in an early morning sunrise, in the bright blue sky, and in the vastness of a starry night.    And Amos 4:13, “He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and reveals His thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth-the Lord God Almighty is His name.” God is everywhere.  We see Him in the laughter of happy children,  in the smile of good friends, and in the miracle of a newborn baby.  We find Him in hope, in joyful celebration, and in those perfect moments of quiet peace.  Jeremiah 29:13, “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” That sounds just like a treasure hunt, I’m in, are you?

Blanket Protection

Findley State Park“Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superwoman!”  This is what I’m sure people are saying about me when I ride on the bike trail.  (I have no actual data to support this claim. My moderate speed also indicates people may be thinking I am taking a leisurely bike ride.  But you never know…) On the trail, you will see dog walkers, joggers, and a variety of serious to leisurely bikers.  Tonight while I was riding I came upon an elderly couple walking slowing and gingerly along the path.  As I drew near them I said, “I am passing on your left.” The gentleman immediately grabbed his wife’s hand and stepped between her and my bike.  There was something about that instant act of protection that moved me.  He didn’t hesitate, and in that perfect moment, the older man became her bodyguard.

Don’t we all wish we had someone to watch over us when we’re walking on this journey called life?  Here’s the good news: we do.  Isaiah 41:3, “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”  You’re not on this road alone, so even if the path is rocky and difficult, even if the storms of life try to slow you down, you can keep going.  Unexpected hazards are not going to stop you, because you have an unstoppable God who will shield and protect you all the days of your life.  Here’s your guarantee: “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8) So rest easy and keep walking forward,  because you have blanket protection: God covers it all.

Think Good Thoughts

blogThis summer my niece and her family transformed an old rundown farmhouse into a comfortable, refreshing place to live.  You should have seen how it looked when they started!  It needed new paint in every room, the mice had to be asked to leave (evicted is a better way to put it), and water lines had to be repaired.  Ceilings were raised, the stairway opened, and more windows were added.  When the air conditioning went in I believe my niece did a dance for joy (and who doesn’t love a little air on those hot and humid summer days?).  The transformation didn’t happen overnight and yet they now live in a beautiful home filled with kids’ laughter, family and friends, and the soft purr of an air conditioner.

In much the same way, we can transform our thinking.  It won’t happen over night, our thoughts patterns are too ingrained in us, but we can do it.  Our minds are cluttered with so many things that are not helpful to us:  worry, negativity, anger, resentment, lies, and past hurts.  From Philippians 4:8, “Finally… whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure,  whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”  We have to be deliberate about ‘changing the channel’ when our thoughts become negative, and this is challenging!  But we don’t have to do it in our own power, we can ask God to help us.  And He will!  Psalm 54:4 says, “Surely God is my help; the Lord is the One who sustains me.”  Let’s allow God to help us, so those 100 billion nerve cells have a beautiful home filled with good thoughts, love and laughter, and occasionally the soft purr of an air conditioner.
