You Can’t Replace a Great Friend

You can’t replace a great friend.  This is true of my friend Diane, who battled cancer for 3 and half years and recently lost the fight.  Besides being such an amazing friend, she was also a loving wife, a proud mom to 3 boys, a caring teacher, motivating coach, and all-around special person.  How can you replace the smiles, the laughter, the easy-going ways of someone so incredible?  How do you replace the caring, the helpfulness, the vibrancy of such a person?  The truth is, you can’t.  But Diane holds a special place in my heart, right where all the beautiful memories are stored.   “A friend loves at all times…” (Proverbs 17:17, NIV) And that, quite simply, is irreplaceable.

God is an amazing friend too. He truly and deeply loves us. “Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.” (Psalm 36:5, NIV) He is there when we need him.  He stands by just waiting to help.  “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. ” (Psalm 46:1, NIV) He wants us to be filled with joy. “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalm 16:11, NIV) The Lord watches over and protects us.  “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” (Psalm 91:4, NLT)   God wants to hold a special place in our hearts.  In that way, his love is eternal.  “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3, NIV) Having God as our friend, quite simply, is irreplaceable.

Suddenly is Coming

My daisies suddenly burst open.  Truthfully, the  buds had been taking shape for days. Most of the year the daisies are just nice green plants, but for a month every year, they are stunning.  The day I planted the small flowers I hoped for the best.  Placing them gently in the ground, I gave them food and water.    On a consistent schedule, I fed them, (not bacon an eggs, but you know, plant food).  Although there were time I wondered if they’d make it, today they’re very strong.  Through the years the flowers have multiplied.  And then suddenly, they are glorious to behold.

Our lives are unfolding in the same way.  It takes a long time to reach our fullest potential.  Fortunately, we have a Master Gardener watching over us.   “Sing about a fruitful vineyard: I, the Lord, watch over it; I water it continually.  I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.”  (Isaiah 27:2-3)  There are days when we don’t feel it, but our strength is growing.  God is diligent towards His children.  “The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you at dry and restoring your strength.  You will be a well-watered garden, like an ever flowing spring.”  (Isaiah 58:11) Waiting takes patience, but there is beauty in our future.  “And this is going to be a glorious unfolding.  Just you wait and see and you will be amazed.  You’ve just got to believe the story is so far from over; So hold on to every promise God has made to us.  And watch this glorious unfolding…”  (Song: Glorious Unfolding by Steven Curtis Chapman)  God’s been planning good things for a long time.  In an instant, we’ll see His beauty unfold.  “I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. (Isaiah 48:3)

Confident Expectation

The flowers I planted today were nice, but they hold no comparison to their future glory.  Right now they’re a bit sparse, a little droopy, and a bit on the small side.  Don’t get me wrong, the yellow flowers (coreopsis, yarrow, and petunias) on my front porch have already added a ‘touch of color.’ The red geraniums are taking a stand under the pergola of the back porch.  However, I am expecting more color as summer approaches.  My flowers need the basics: sun, water, and perhaps a sprinkling of Miracle-Gro.  But their greatest need: just a little more time.

Sometimes our circumstances need a little more time too.  But who wants to wait for situations to improve?  And what’s so great about waiting?  Isaiah 40:31, “…but they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”  (Okay, so strength and endless energy, that sounds pretty great.)   Even if the waiting seems endless, stay strong!  “For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.  Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. (Habakkuk 2:3) The real question then: ‘How should we wait?’   We should wait with confident expectation because there are better days ahead. Psalms 27:31, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Here’s the truth: God knows your address, so with confident expectation you can be sure His goodness will arrive right on time.

God is in the Details

Burnt rolls, undercooked roast beef, and runny casserole.  What do they have in common?  They happened in my kitchen, when I was cooking.  Although up for debate, my biggest blunder happened when I was a preteen.  My family was going to be surprised with my chocolate chip cookies. I was pretty impressed with myself as I took the cookies out of the oven.  Proudly I carried  them into the living room to share with my brothers and they enthusiastically grabbed them.  However, their groans, cries of distress, and strong words, (I am deliberately leaving those words out), caused me great confusion.  Apparently, substituting salt for sugar in a recipe is a bad idea.  Who would have thought a cup of salt could make such a fuss? I guess I should have been paying better attention to the details.

Fortunately, God keeps a close watch on His ‘projects.’  From the start, He was always watching over us. “You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” (Psalm 139:16)  He doesn’t wander off and think about other things like I do.  Genesis 28:15, “What’s more, I am with you, and will protect you wherever you go…I will be with you constantly until I have finished giving you all I am promising.” And let’s face it, He’s promising a lot!  He’s arranging things in our favor.  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  (Jeremiah 29:11)  Unlike me, God is always paying attention.  When He starts something, you know it’s going to be simply amazing.  After all, the details are His specialty.

Chased by Goodness

Some time ago I flew to Texas to support a family I loved during a heart-wrenching time of trial. Struggling in the last days of his life was a husband, a father, and a friend. His loved ones faced the crisis in different ways: flat-out denial, avoidance, or quiet acceptance with inner turmoil.  I tried to balance my time meeting the needs of everyone involved, including my friend who was in his final days. It wasn’t easy, but the prayers of many friends kept me upright.  Flying home after that experience, I was weary and exhausted.  I told God I had nothing left to give, and I was ready for the peace and rest of Heaven.  Immediately I looked out the window and filling the sky was a massive, gorgeous rainbow.  Moved to tears, deep inside me I felt these words, “It’s not your time.  You have so many promises in front of you.”

Are any of you feeling weary today?  Does it seem like you can’t face another day or another challenge?  Hang on, because God is saying you have promises in front of you.  From Isaiah 61:3, “To all who mourn He will give beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair…”  There are better days ahead; days of strength, hope, and light.  “Because you got a double dose of trouble and more than your share of contempt, your inheritance in the land will be doubled, and your joy will go on forever.”  (Isaiah 61:7)   Expect God’s goodness to come bursting into your circumstances. “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23:6)  Here’s a promise: God’s goodness is chasing after you. (Take my advice: slow down and let it catch you.)

Step Outside

Making the world is harder than you think.  My nephew Zach had to make ten different landforms for a Social Studies project.  We worked together and used Play-Doh, paint, Elmer’s glue, toothpicks, and numerous other craft items.  Making the mountains was fun, creating an island with a palm tree in the middle of the lake was neat, but shaping tiny cactus for the desert was rather tricky.  Zach got to name each place and he chose a football theme.  We had Running Back River, Quarterback Lake, and even Touchdown Island.  Our miniature ‘snapshot’ of the world took a long time to put together, but we sure enjoyed creating it.

In light of our seemingly big project, I can’t help and marvel again at God’s life-size project in creating the earth.  “The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land.” (Psalm 95:5) How can we even begin to describe earth’s majesty?   Willie McCool, a Space Shuttle Columbia astronaut, described earth from space.  He said, “The colors are stunning. In a single view, I see – looking out at the edge of the earth: red at the horizon line, blending to orange and yellow, followed by a thin white line, then light blue, gradually turning to dark blue and various gradually darker shades of gray, then black and a million stars above. It’s breathtaking.” “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” (Psalm 19:1) George Washington Carver stated it this way, “I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we only will tune in.” Indeed.  God uses nature as a broadcasting station?   I’ve suddenly developed a strong urge to go for a walk.

We Have a Superhero

For a little while today I had my own personal superhero.  (I can actually feel you getting jealous and all I can say is, “na-na na-na boo boo.“)  Picture this: a 3′ tall superhero dressed in a padded Spiderman suit (surprisingly accessorized with a bright, red Superman cape). My 3 year-old nephew Benjamin played the role well, appearing from the corner of the room whenever a cry for help was sounded.  He went immediately to the imaginary ‘bad guys’ and pushed them away.  With each rescue, I heard, “And don’t come back bad guys!”  After taking care of the situation, he strutted to the corner with his muscles bulging and waited patiently for the next cry of distress.

I’m so thankful we have a real-life superhero that is always standing ready to step in and help.  There are too many challenges in this life, too many things that come against us, and too many problems to tackle on our own.  Even if His hands were tied behind His back, God could still handle anything and everything we face.  Are you in the middle of a difficulty? Give it to God. “This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord…” (2 Kings 3:18) He wants to take all those worries you are trying to carry alone.  “Cast all your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.” (Psalm 55:22)  It’s a good idea to start each day thanking God for His goodness.  Following that, we should ask Him to watch over us, and to give us strength and wisdom to face each moment.   Here’s our choice: go through the day fighting battles on our own, or go through the day with the only superhero who ever really existed.  I know the choice I’m going to make, do you?

A Fresh Start

When my large family celebrates Christmas together, we generate alot of trash.  After the gifts are opened, the living room looks like a hurricane came through.  There are boxes, paper, cardboard, and tissue paper strewn all over the floor, chairs, and sometimes on people (mostly from my brothers throwing paper ‘bombs’ at me).  Don’t get me started on the kitchen, as food is consumed at a rapid rate and the trash can gets filled and the bag replaced repeatedly throughout the day.  When the parties are over and the last eggroll is eaten, we sort the things we recycle from the things we call trash.  Either way, it all gets hauled out.

As the New Year approaches, we all need to get rid of the trash we’ve been hanging onto.   Sometimes we keep anger, bitterness, disappointments, or worries longer than we should.  God thinks so too. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19) God doesn’t want us to hang onto things which don’t bring light and joy to our future.  He wants to make our future bright.  “But this I call to mind and, therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:21-23) God wants to give us a fresh and beautiful beginning.  We can do our part by letting go of the old and looking forward to the next season God has for us.  After all, “There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.” (Proverbs 23:18) Let’s stick with God’s Plan A: a bright and hope-filled New Year.

A Night of Hope

Where does hope come from?  As I was pondering that question, I came across the lyrics to a Christmas song by a group called the Sidewalk Prophets.  Their song ‘Hope Was Born This Night’ explains it better than I can. Here’s a portion of the lyrics.  See what you think:

Tonight I can see a star shine and its splendor fills up the sky
It’s the same that appeared and the wise men revered
When hope was born this night

Out upon the snowy fields there’s a silent peace that heals
And it echoes the grace of our Savior’s embrace
Because hope was born this night

Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, good will to all men
Let all of the world sing the chorus of joy
Because hope was born this night

I can hear the Christmas bells ring as softly as a church choir sings
It’s the song used to praise the Ancient of Days
When hope was born this night

I know hope was born this night
Because Christ was born this night

Everything changed with the miraculous birth in that little manger in Bethlehem.  When Jesus was born on that long ago night, hope exploded into the world.  God’s plans for us have always been good.  He said, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)  This year on Christmas, when you’re unwrapping your presents, don’t forget to unwrap the gift of hope.  And from my house to yours, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him…” Merry Christmas, my friends.

Expect a Visit

star-1553477_1920-christmasWhen God sent His angel to tell the world where Jesus would be born, you’d think he would have gone to the Bethlehem mayor’s office.  The  news stations would have loved that scoop, or even the Bethlehem News Messenger would want a chance at the story.  I wonder why He didn’t just post it on Facebook?  There were so many ways God could have announced His Son’s birth, but He chose to share it with the lowly shepherds.  Luke 2:8-12, “And in the same area there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And then an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were very afraid.  But the angel said to them, “Listen! Do not fear. For I bring you good news of great joy, which will be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  And this will be a sign to you: You will find the Baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”

We get another picture of God in this story-He’ll go to great lengths to bring you His goodness and His light.  It doesn’t matter if you are unimportant by the world’s standards, because God says you matter.  You may feel unappreciated, lost, or lonely, but God sees you and you are the apple of His eye.  Psalm 139: 17-18, “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!” So whether you’re in a crowded room or on a lonely hillside, be ready; God loves to make an appearance when you least expect it.
