Fits Perfectly

water-1579097_1280-for-blogMy mom likes to put challenging 1,000 piece puzzles together.  She had one with old-fashioned tea cups where almost every single cup had gold rims and small blue and pink flowers.  Another one was a solid picture of sprinkled and frosted doughnuts which, quite honestly, just made me hungry.  Her most recent puzzle is a football stadium packed with fans (Are you kidding me?).  When she dumps a box out I can’t help but think it will never come together, because it’s just a jumbled mess that doesn’t look like anything promising.  And yet every time, little by little, a picture begins to form.   It doesn’t happen overnight and mom has to keep working at it, but each time the final picture is simply quite amazing.

Unfortunately, sometimes life can be a complicated puzzle.  It just seems like a bunch of events that produce nothing but problems and chaos.  But take heart, God is working in your life right now to bring it all together.  From Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.  He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”   God had you on His radar for a long time.  Psalm 139:16-17, “You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.  How precious are your thoughts about me God!  They cannot be numbered!”  Grab ahold of this thought-you are always on God’s mind.  He’s looking at all the seemingly impossible parts of your life and He’s fitting them together to create something beautiful.  So stay steadfast and keep watching, because your life is a work of art in the Master’s hands.

The Battle is Yours

alberta-blogBosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq are a few places listed on my friend’s resume.  TJ’s a colonel in the United States Army and has also served her country faithfully during Desert Storm and at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.   Her resume is littered with impressive honors, strong leadership, and passionate pursuits.  There aren’t many challenges that will intimidate a soldier of her standing but one duty still makes her nervous: briefing a general.  There’s something about all those stars on his uniform that gives her pause.  Even with rigorous research, scrutiny of information, and extensively rehearsing the speech, her heart still races when she approaches the general’s office.   So she leans in.  Psalm 86:7, “In the day of trouble I call upon you, for you answer me.” Even a strong colonel needs the support of an Almighty God.

Psalm 46:1 states, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”  You don’t have to face your challenges alone.  God wants to be right there in the thick of your problems.  He promises that you do not have to face one day without His help.  “Be strong and courageous.  Don’t fear or tremble before them, for the Lord your God will be the one who keeps on walking with you-He won’t leave you or abandon you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6) You are in the majority when God is on your side because He is bigger than anything you are facing.  The things in front of you may seem impossible, but everything is possible with God.  “But this is a simple thing for the Lord, for He will make you victorious…” So stand tall because God is right beside you. And that means not only will you win this battle, but you’re also going to win the  war.

Perfect Timing

field-for-blogNone of us like to be kept waiting.  We are easily frustrated by long check out lines, slow traffic patterns, and even the popcorn we just put in the microwave seems to takes too long.  But there’s a group of people who know a little something about waiting: American farmers.  They prepare the land, sow the seed, irrigate, fertilize, and then patiently wait.  I know a few farmers and I’ve never seen one try to make it rain, (but I would absolutely video tape it if they did).  Farmers know what to do to get good results: work hard every day, put in a FULL day, use techniques to ensure success, then step back and wait for the harvest. From Galatians 6:9, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Let’s face it, farmers know how to wait.

Do we?  How many times do we try to speed up events in our lives instead of letting them unfold naturally?  In every situation, we need to do all we are able, then step back and allow God’s timing to take place.  From Psalm 130:5-6, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning…”  What have you been hoping for, longing for, waiting for…?  Even if it’s taking a long time, do all that you know to do, then expect that something good is going to happen.  You can trust that God knows a thing or two about timing. From Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…”  So hold tight, wait patiently, and trust God, because His timing is perfect.

It’s All Coming Together

sunrise-for blogFor my mom’s 60th birthday, I wanted to do something really special for her so I decided to sew her a quilt.  There was only one small glitch in my lofty plan: I didn’t know how to sew.  Luckily, I knew someone who did.  The Family and Consumer Science Teacher (Home Ec to me), was an expert.  She opened her classroom for sewing nights and patiently taught me each step.  Quilters seem to have their own foreign language.  When I heard ‘Stitch in the ditch” I thought it was a reference to where I should throw the pitiful-looking thing I was making.  My early work was not impressive!  Sometimes I’d look at those frayed squares and crooked stitches and doubt that it was going to develop into something worth making.  The waiting for a completed project seemed endless.  Yet surprisingly, little by little, something quite lovely began to take shape.  And finally, the completed work became a beautiful and treasured gift.

Your life can follow a similar pattern.  Sometimes you look at an individual day and wonder if the next will be better.  Waiting for a relationship to improve, bills to be paid, or a job issue to get resolved can overwhelm your days.  But rest assured, your life is going to get better.  God is working behind the scenes right now to improve your circumstances.  “I believe I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:13-14)  You can be sure there are brighter days right around the corner; so keep going, keep waiting, and start expecting something good to happen.  Ecclesiastes 3:11 assures us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time…” There may be a lot of frayed places in your life, but those loose ends are coming together, and when they do, it’s going to make something quite beautiful.

Expect Good Things

OSUI’m an Ohio State Buckeye fan, (say it with me now “O-H-I-O”).  When you’re a Buckeye fan, your expectations stay high.  Each game we get to see a strategic plan unfolding, observe an energy radiating from players on the field, and witness incredible displays of athleticism, (“Did you see that catch?”).  I can’t help but think about the 2011 game against Wisconsin that looked like OSU was letting a win slip away.  His team down 26-29, a minute and 10 seconds left on the clock, quarterback Braxton Miller winks at his coach and says, “We’re all right.” He was anticipating that something good was about to happen.  And it did!  Miller stepped onto the field and with 20 seconds left on the clock, threw a 40 yard touchdown pass to win the game.

In the same way, we can expect good things in our future.  It may seem that all the baggage we’re carrying from the past will hold us back, but we can let go of it.   From Isaiah 48:14, “Forget what happened in the past, and do not dwell on events from long ago.”  Instead of thinking about the troubles of yesterday, focus on the good of today and the beauty in tomorrow.  Proverbs 23:18 says, “Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.”  Just like in football, things can come against us (luckily, not a 6 foot, 300 pound lineman).  Life certainly has it’s share of challenges, but everyday we have the choice to look back or to look forward.  So let’s get a new game plan, and expect that something good is about to happen. Because if you check, you’ll see there’s still time left on the clock.

Keep Hope Alive

I’m a Cleveland Browns fan.  On most Sunday afternoons my tv will be tuned into the game.  But sometimes when the game gets frustrating, a nap sounds like a good alternative option.  But my mom and niece Dawn are diehard fans.  Here’s proof: One year they got tickets to go to a Steelers vs. Browns game, at Heinz Field.  It was one of those Sunday afternoons when the snow is falling relentlessly in a blizzard-type atmosphere and anyone even thinking of going to a game should have their head examined.  Yet Dawn and mom bundled up and covered all those layers with Brown’s coats, hats, and scarves.   As they boarded the downtown Pittsburg bus the place was packed with Steeler fans.  And every single one went silent when they saw the audacity of two orange and brown-dressed fans.  (Pause for awkward silence…)  Then finally the words, “Brown’s fans sit in the back.”  Can anyone relate to this? Are you the fan that will cheer for your team even if the odds are stacked against you?

What’s that about? One word: hope.  It doesn’t matter what’s happened in the past or even what the scoreboard says at the moment.  We still have a chance to win.  We will hope against hope that this is the season where our team shines.

In a similar way, we can have hope in our own lives when we need a personal breakthrough.  1 Corinthians 2:9, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.”  Are you in the middle of a tough time?  Take heart, because God is thinking about you.   His plans for you are beautiful.  From Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  So hang on, because there are better days ahead.  And turn on the game, because this is a new season, and this could be the one that changes everything.

Get Back Up

surf-When Lake Erie gets waves big enough to surf, look for me in the biggest one.  Surfing is fast, exciting, and intense.  It takes a lot of practice to become a skilled surfer.  You must learn the proper technique of standing, positioning yourself on the board, and finding the right wave.  There’s even a correct way to fall!  The experts describe in detail how to fall, and give specific instructions about getting back up again.  It’s not surprising that in surfing it is predicted that you will fall a few times, and probably many times.  But mainly, I like that it’s expected you will get back up.

Life has a tendency to knock us off our feet.  We get surprised by bad news, a loss of a job, a health crisis, and many other difficulties.  Sometimes we get hit in such a way that it seems easier to stay where we are, to not fight through the challenging time.  But Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  When we are weary of the trial and have no strength to get up, God is reaching out to give us a lift.  Isaiah 41:13-14, “For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you…do not be afraid, for I myself will help you.” This life delivers some tough blows, but don’t give up when you fall.  It’s going to get better because God Himself is extending His hand towards you.  So here’s a question from Genesis 18:14: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (In case your wondering, the answer is: No. Nada. No siree. Fat chance. Zilch. Under no circumstances. Not in a million years. Negative.)

Into the Tunnel

tunnel for blogI recently went on a long train ride in Arizona.  We looked at rocky canyons, saguaro cactus, and valleys with slow moving streams.  One curve while traversing a canyon took us through a dark, winding tunnel.  It was a long one and we couldn’t help but wonder if we’d ever get to the other side.  And then we saw a ray of light peeking through the darkness, and as we moved forward it got brighter and brighter, until the light burst through and overtook the darkness.  In our lives, we sometimes come across those black tunnels, times when we wonder if we’ll ever be happy again, or free from worry, or from pain and sickness.

In John 1:5 it says, The light shines in the darkness, and the dark has not overcome it.  It’s important during those rough times to know that we will get through them, because the light is always stronger than the darkness.   When we’re unsure in any circumstance, we can look to the One who will always be there to lead and guide us.  Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105).  Sometimes the tunnels in life take us by surprise, we come around a corner and we’re in a seemingly never-ending place of anxiety, trouble, and trials.  We feel there’s no hope of finding our way out of that challenging place.

But hang on in those trying times, because Jesus, the light of the world, will surely break into your dark moment and chase out the night.  From Psalm 27:1, The Lord is my light and my salvation- whom shall I  fear?

Sunday is coming!

cross for blogI like to watch the NCAA basketball tournament.  But sometimes I’m busy when a game I really want to see is on.  When that happens, I record the game so I can watch it later.  I try to avoid hearing who won the game before I watch it, but today I saw a news clip that let me know the winning team.  Knowing the ending really changed my reactions during the game.  When you know the finale, you can relax during the tense times.  Even when it seems all is lost, you can know for a fact that it is all going to come out perfect in the end.  This makes me think of Good Friday.  I can’t imagine how the disciples felt when it was happening in real time, but here’s the good news for us: we know the ending!  Friday had to be a dark, frightening time for the disciples, but we now know Sunday is coming.  And Sunday changes everything!

In Peter 1:3-4 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  In His great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade-kept in heaven for you.”  When things don’t look the way they should and life is harder than we would choose it to be, we can look forward knowing there are better days ahead of us.  Heaven, which is too wonderful to imagine is assured, and there are better days to expect here on earth too.  Psalm 27:13 says, “I am still confident of this; I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”  So if your Friday is dark, look expectantly to Sunday.  It’s coming!

A New Season

water-for blogThe rain is falling softly outside my window today.  It heralds in the beginning of a new season.  There’s something about the coming of spring that produces abundant hope.  Hope for a new beginning, a fresh start, or a change in circumstance.  God gets credit for the seasons, and for the hope that stirs our hearts.  Genesis 1:14 , “And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years…'”

Winter can seem never-ending: bitter cold days, raging winds, and perpetual darkness.  It’s comforting to know that although we’ve been deep in the winter, both physically and spiritually, the season is changing.  We can even request a change!  Zechariah 10:1 says, “Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime; it is the Lord who makes the storm clouds.  He gives showers of rain to men, and plants of the field to everyone.”  That’s  another way of saying God will meet our needs, answer our prayers, and give us what He promised: abundant life.  Jesus said in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

We need to get in agreement with God, to have faith that what He says is true.  There’s a change in the air.  Can you feel it?  I do.  Let’s watch and hope for the new.   Let’s get our umbrellas out so we’re ready for the blessings God has planned for us. And, “May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)
