The Destination is Just Ahead

Beautiful Clouds: The Destination is Just Ahead
The Destination is Just Ahead

My mom and I took a trip this past week and encountered many obstacles.  It was hard to remember that the destination was ahead.  First, the roads were jammed with traffic.  Second, there was road work being completed and three busy lanes merged into one, creating major slowdowns.  Then, a heavy rain crashed relentlessly against the windshield making it hard to see.  Unfortunately, I took a wrong turn and added an extra hour to an already never-ending drive.  Mom and I were weary when we finally reached our journey’s end.  But amazingly, when we were finally in the place we wanted to be, all the earlier trials faded into the background.

Difficulties can get in the way of our hopes and dreams too.  But we won’t give up, because the destination is just ahead.  “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” (Galatians  6:9 NLT) Remember, we’re not traveling this road alone. God says with his help, our dreams are attainable.  “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'” (Matthew 19:26 NIV) The plan God has for our lives is good, so we can travel with confidence.  “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11, NLT) Let hope arise, because the destination is just ahead.

Things to do today:

You’re Stronger Than You Think

Mountains with Evergreen Trees: You're Stronger Than You Think
You’re Stronger Than You Think

The first step in building a house is making sure the foundation is strong. When my youngest brother was building his house, we all went to help the day the basement walls were to be poured. As it turned out, there had been heavy rains the day before and the cement truck had to stay in the driveway.  That complicated things because the chute wasn’t long enough for the cement to pour the farthest walls. This meant the cement had to be carried in 5 gallon buckets by manpower, or in my case, womanpower.  It turns out I was stronger than I thought.  The cement guy filled the buckets and handed them to us, I lugged mine across the wide expanse of the floor, perhaps a bit slower than the men. Even though the task was difficult, pulling on my inner strength kept me going.

Life has a way of sending us unexpected burdens.  Things can come at us that seem impossible to face; but we are stronger than we think.  As we rely on the strength of God, our inner resilience rises.  This allows us to face the difficult days and remain standing.  “The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, And makes me walk on my high places.” (Habakkuk 3:19 NASB)  God gives us the ability to face the tough days, not barely making it, but standing steadfast in the storm.  We can persevere even when the storms are coming against us; we’ve got what it takes to hang in there.  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm…” (Ephesians 6:10-11 NASB) Even on the tough days, let’s keep standing, because we’re stronger than we think.

Things to do today:

  1. Ask God to increase your strength to face the day.

Stay in the Fight

I had fun today watching my niece Taylor play in a 7th grade volleyball tournament.  Even though her team was a bit of an underdog, I still wanted to tell her to ‘stay in the fight.’  Most sports are about process: learning the skills, practicing the skills, and putting them to the test.  Since I’ve watched her team over the season, I can see the improvement they’ve made.  Today they played well and even battled to take a game from the number one seed.  They ended up losing the match, but they are making forward progress!  Although today ended this season, there are still many volleyball games in Taylor’s future.

We have difficult days when we just want to shut down, to mentally ‘check out’ of our lives.  But we also need to stay in the fight.  We can’t look at a difficult time and think our lives are over.  We must remember this is one moment in time, and we have many good days ahead of us.   We may feel alone in this, but that’s just not true! “The Lord is the one who is going ahead of you.  He will be with you.  He won’t abandon you or leave you. So don’t be afraid or terrified.” (Deuteronomy 31:8 GWT) We can ask God to shelter us during the long days and sleepless nights.  “He will cover you with his feathers.  He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” (Psalm 91:4) Even when everything seems to be coming against us, we shouldn’t give up.  Although we can’t always see it, God is fighting battles for us.  “…the Lord your God is the one fighting for you…”  (Deuteronomy 3:22 NASB)

Things to do today:

  1. Ask God to shelter you through this tough time in your life.

Confident Expectation

The flowers I planted today were nice, but they hold no comparison to their future glory.  Right now they’re a bit sparse, a little droopy, and a bit on the small side.  Don’t get me wrong, the yellow flowers (coreopsis, yarrow, and petunias) on my front porch have already added a ‘touch of color.’ The red geraniums are taking a stand under the pergola of the back porch.  However, I am expecting more color as summer approaches.  My flowers need the basics: sun, water, and perhaps a sprinkling of Miracle-Gro.  But their greatest need: just a little more time.

Sometimes our circumstances need a little more time too.  But who wants to wait for situations to improve?  And what’s so great about waiting?  Isaiah 40:31, “…but they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”  (Okay, so strength and endless energy, that sounds pretty great.)   Even if the waiting seems endless, stay strong!  “For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.  Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. (Habakkuk 2:3) The real question then: ‘How should we wait?’   We should wait with confident expectation because there are better days ahead. Psalms 27:31, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Here’s the truth: God knows your address, so with confident expectation you can be sure His goodness will arrive right on time.

Unconditional

There’s a children’s book I read to my nephew called, No, David!   In the book, a carefree 4 year-old is relentless in his pursuit of fun.  Unfortunately, his boisterous ways breaks a favorite vase. He also scribbles on the walls in purple crayon and sticks most of his supper up his nose.  Arguably, his most humorous transgression was running down the sidewalk naked.  (WARNING: Do not try this at home! ) Yet even with his multiple infractions, the day ends perfectly.  We see his mom gently holding David, softly whispering, “I love you.”   Thankfully, David is not defined by his many mistakes, but by the unconditional love of his mother.

Our days can be riddled with problems too.  We may have relationship, health, or financial issues.  But at the end of the day, we are not defined by our challenges.  God calls us His own. “But now, this is what the Lord says…’Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.'” (Isaiah 43:1) Fortunately, God constantly watches over His children.  “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to his heart; He gently leads those that have young.” We are not facing any day alone; we always have a Helper in the trying times. “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you.'” (Isaiah 41:13)  Therefore, we can start each day by turning over our worries, our problems, and our pain.  We can move through the day leaning into a loving God.  Lastly, as the day ends, we can listen for His gentle voice softly whispering, “I love you.” So let’s walk in perfect peace each day, for we have the unconditional love of our Father.

Straight Towards the Light

My class walked to the library early this morning in a light rain with warm air.  Since we weren’t dealing with a cold wind and pelting, unforgiving rain, it was a bit of an adventure.  About an hour later, however, everything changed.  The next class walked in a thick fog with significantly colder air.  That walk to the library wasn’t enjoyable; we put our heads down and marched determinedly on.  Thankfully, the cool and damp air was soon forgotten in the light and warmth of the library.

Life has a way of throwing unwanted surprises at us too.  One minute we’re walking along just fine and in the next instant we are facing a sickness, a loss, or a challenge that seems too much to bear.  But similar to the library, we can look to the Light for rescue.  Jesus said, “I am the world’s Light; no one who follows Me stumbles around in the darkness.  I provide plenty of light to live in.”  (John 8:12)  Truth be told, we can have shelter from every storm. “For He will hide me in His shelter in time of trouble, He will conceal me in the cover of His tent; and set me high upon a rock.”  (Psalm 27:5)  We don’t have to be afraid on the dark days, because we are protected.  “God is our refuge and strength, a tested help in times of trouble.  And so we need not fear even if the world blows up and the mountains crumble into the sea.” In the middle of a storm? Put your head down and walk straight towards the Light, because once you step in, you’ll be surrounded by God’s warmth and protection.

You Can Do This!

I bought a bicycle like they use in Spin Classes at the gym.  You know, the classes where all the participants look like they’ve been chiseled out of granite?  Yep, I have that bike.  It’s actually pretty hilarious as my body feels like it was formed from a large box of Play Doh.  As I ride, I watch a Spin Class video and I think the instructor can read my mind.  Just when I am thinking I might stop she says, “Don’t quit now!  You can do this!” So I keep going.  When I think I am not going to make it to the end, she says, “Come on, you’re an athlete, show us how it’s done!” (For some reason Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Glory Days’ is going through my mind…) I’m happy to say with the extra encouragement I usually make it through the workout, but I keep hoping it’s going to get a little easier.

We have to keep going on the tough days of our lives too.  Fortunately, the Bible is rich in encouragement.  We need to grab ahold of all that support God has laid out for us.  Here’s some: “But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” (2 Chronicles 15:7)  Or from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”  Each of us has those tough times that last longer than they should.  Amazingly, we don’t have to keep moving in our own strength. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)  Are the odds stacked against you? Listen closely, because God is saying, “Don’t quit now!  You can do this!”

Standing in the Storm

304475_10151253739365067_139629285_n-tomb-of-unknown-soldierIf I want a picture of steadfastness, I know where to go.  The Sentinels who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. fit the picture.  They protect the tomb in every kind of weather-including torrential rains, blizzards, and Washington’s relentlessly hot summers.  The Sentinels are completely dedicated to their mission-guarding and ‘watching the back’ of the unknown soldier.  The Society of the Honor Guard reports:  “It gets cold, it gets hot and the mission continues as it has unbroken since 1937.” Just imagine, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every minute of every day and every minute of every night, standing firm.  The Sentinels exemplify Corinthians 4:2,  “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.”

Most of us would never volunteer to stand in a snowstorm for 8 hours.  However, we all have times in our lives when we need to be steadfast; many areas of our lives require it.  Can we keep going in the tough times?  It won’t be easy, but we can do it, because we don’t have to do it alone.  From Isaiah 41:13, “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.'” You might be surprised to know you can even stay calm during the storms of life. “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.  Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord Himself, is the Rock eternal.” (Isaiah 26:3-4) From 1 Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm.  Let nothing move you.” If it’s storming in your world, You CAN stand firm.  Just be sure to grab a really large umbrella, because you won’t be standing alone.

Fits Perfectly

water-1579097_1280-for-blogMy mom likes to put challenging 1,000 piece puzzles together.  She had one with old-fashioned tea cups where almost every single cup had gold rims and small blue and pink flowers.  Another one was a solid picture of sprinkled and frosted doughnuts which, quite honestly, just made me hungry.  Her most recent puzzle is a football stadium packed with fans (Are you kidding me?).  When she dumps a box out I can’t help but think it will never come together, because it’s just a jumbled mess that doesn’t look like anything promising.  And yet every time, little by little, a picture begins to form.   It doesn’t happen overnight and mom has to keep working at it, but each time the final picture is simply quite amazing.

Unfortunately, sometimes life can be a complicated puzzle.  It just seems like a bunch of events that produce nothing but problems and chaos.  But take heart, God is working in your life right now to bring it all together.  From Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.  He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”   God had you on His radar for a long time.  Psalm 139:16-17, “You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.  How precious are your thoughts about me God!  They cannot be numbered!”  Grab ahold of this thought-you are always on God’s mind.  He’s looking at all the seemingly impossible parts of your life and He’s fitting them together to create something beautiful.  So stay steadfast and keep watching, because your life is a work of art in the Master’s hands.

Pushing into your New Season

tulips for blogIn Ohio, the weather can be unpredictable.  (I think I just heard someone call me ‘Captain Obvious.’)    A week ago we had one such evening that I’ll call ‘Interesting’.  Although we had temperatures hovering in the 70’s a few days before, this night it began to snow.  I wish I could says that’s all it did, but Ohio let loose with every type of weather in its arsenal.  We experienced periods of snow, then hail, and a little freezing rain for good measure.  After that the sun came out for a minute, and the next thing I knew it was raining.  Thunder and lightning followed, sprinkled with a few more snowflakes.  At times it was a white blanket out my window, and then I saw the sun charge through the clouds.  This roller coaster of weather went on for some time, and was impossible not to watch, as one second hail piled up in my landscaping, and then was abruptly washed by rain.  On and on the changes went, each overshadowing the former.

As I watched the spectacle, I couldn’t help wondering, “What happened to spring?”  Then it hit me: when we are looking for a new season in our lives, it doesn’t always come easily.  I sure wish there would be this flowing and gentle transition to the changes I want in my life, but that’s rarely true.    Just like Ohio’s weather, sometimes we have to push through for the change, to keep moving towards the new.  But we don’t have to use our own strength to do it, God wants to help!

From Isaiah 40:29, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”  Add Isaiah 40:31, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”  So how are you going to get to your new season: soar, run, or walk?  The choice is yours.
