Don’t Let Your Guard Down

My brother owns a contracting business that largely centers around land restoration.  Because I work with him, I’ve been in some pretty interesting places and done some pretty interesting things.  I’ve worn waders and walked across a wetland, rode a 4 wheeler while ‘spraying the edges’ at a controlled burn, and unfortunately got a Ranger stuck in a very wet marsh, more than once!  I’ve planted hundreds of trees, walked through weeds that were way over my head, and sprayed herbicide from a punt boat my brother was ferrying.  However, my favorite activity is caring for the trees in our tree farm.  But one time this summer, I wasn’t in the tree farm for over two weeks.  Upon returning, it was overrun with 3-4′ weeds!  It didn’t take me long to realize you can’t let your guard down when you’re caring for trees.

We Have to Guard our Thoughts!

This is also true in our thinking.  We have to guard our thoughts.  The world comes at us hard: it is constantly giving us something to worry about.  However, we don’t have to listen! Romans 12:2 (ESV) states,  “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”  When everything seems hopeless , we must  fill our minds with something hopeful.  Isaiah 26:3 (ESV) states: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Did you catch that? PERFECT PEACE. We can believe God when He says, “I will be your God throughout your lifetime—
until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you.” (Isaiah 46:4, NLT)

Overflowing with Joy

A present brings joy.There’s something about the Christmas season that is simply magical.  It’s literally overflowing with joy. Two of the things I really like are the sights and sounds.   My taste in the music of Christmas is a bit eclectic: I love ‘O Holy Night’ but I can easily join in when I hear ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.’  (Perhaps not my proudest moment…)  Similarly, don’t even get me started on the lights.   Popping with colors or stunning in white-I find them mesmerizing.  I’m pretty fond of Christmas sugar cookies too, occasionally eating them Christmas morning for breakfast.  (Don’t judge me; that’s on my schedule again this year.) Christmas feels like a beautiful present filled with glad tidings and great joy.

It’s time to shout aloud and sing

From the beginning, Christmas was always going to be overflowing with joy.  On that first Christmas Eve,  the night began unremarkable for the shepherds.  But then an angel showed up and ordinary flew, (pardon the pun), right out the window. “Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them.”(Luke 2:9, NLT).  The angel announced the arrival of the Messiah, in the form of a precious baby.  “The Savior-yes, the Messiah, the Lord–has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!”(Luke 2:11, NLT) When the baby Jesus entered the world, the door to joy was flung wide open.  He  wants us to experience joy at Christmas; but He also wants us to have joy all year.  With that in mind, today is the right time to find the perfect song to bring this gift to life.  “Shout aloud, and sing for joy… because great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 12:6, ISV)

Pick up the Good Stuff

Why is it that whenever I run into Wal Mart with only one item needed I walk out with a cart full of things? Seriously, I go from a $10.00 item to spending over $100.00.  It’s crazy, or ‘cray cray’ as my niece would say.  The problem is I pick up things as I walk along, many times without much thought.  I grab this and a little of that, and stock up here and refill something there…where does it stop?  Let’s not even talk about the grocery section, because one item will always become 20.  (I am not going to mention the things I grab when I walk into the store hungry…it’s not pretty…actually, I should probably just go undercover when this happens.)  Needless to say, it would be better if I left all the ‘quick grab’ items and only picked up the good stuff.

Every one of us, as we journey through each day, ‘pick up’ things that are better left alone.  Often it’s when we interact with others.  They may be angry, negative, or feeling defeated.  Instead of just supporting them, we inadvertently take on and internalize their emotions.  It’s not healthy to carry that negativity around all day.   Instead, when we are thinking about the difficult situations our friends and co-workers face, we need to renew our minds, to: ‘think good thoughts‘ as my friend Sarah would say.  Then our rough day gets transformed into a brighter day.  “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” (Romans 12:2, NLT) Let’s make a decision to keep our days positive, to pay attention to what we ‘pick up’.  “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8, NIV)

  1. Count your blessings.  Take time to think of the good things that are in your life.

You Get to Choose

In Robert Frost’s poem, ‘The Road Not Taken,’ we see life continually forces us to make choices. You get to choose, even though deciding what to do can be difficult. Often one choice is easier, so it feels right to walk in that direction. However, there can be a difficult choice that will be more rewarding in the end. Hmm…what to do? What to do? I’m not completely sure Mr. Frost had it all figured out, but my favorite lines in the poem suggest he did. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the diffference.” He implies that not taking the easy route, the road that is calling us, has changed his life. Can it change ours?

How often do we walk down the road of fear? Considering the amount of things that this world throws at us in one day, this is certainly an easy road to choose. Along this road we can stumble on the roadblocks: panic, anxiety, and distress. The journey on this path slows our forward progress and steals our joy. Clearly, we need to choose another road.

Here’s good news: God went before us and laid out a sheltered road. “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will never fail you nor abandon you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NLT). On this road our strength will rise, and peace and joy will follow us. “The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace.” (Psalm 29:11, NASB) Think of this: there are two paths we can walk on: one will increase our worry, and the other will increase our faith. Choose wisely, for it will make all the difference.

Watch out for the Potholes

I push mow my elderly neighbor’s lawn.  It’s a beautiful, thick lawn that loves to grow and takes about 45 minutes to mow.  I enjoy being outside so I really don’t mind.  But I do mind that there are around 4-5 holes in her yard that are difficult to see because of the thick grass.  Invariably, I step in at least one each time I mow.  My ankles do not enjoy this added feature of lawn care! They end up hurting me all week long. It would help if I’d  pay more attention and watch for the holes, but they seem to continually  sneak up on me. I wish someone would have told me to watch out for the potholes.

Likewise, if we’re not careful, life can trip us up.   Negative thoughts have a way of sneaking up on us, and before we realize it: worry and fear have moved in.  When this happens, our own thoughts hold us down.  They keep us from living a peaceful life.  God wants to help with this.  “Don’t be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think…” (Romans 12:2, CEV) Trusting God in our difficult situations is a great place to start.  When we look to him, we begin to feel his peace.  “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isaiah 26:3, NLT). Life offers plenty of chances for worry to sneak into our thoughts.  God has an answer for each one.  Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel. “(Philippians 4:6-7, CEV) My advice: watch out for the potholes!

What Are You Thinking?

What are you thinking?

I’ve been redecorating my bedroom and I’m not sure it will ever get done.  I can only hope that I’ll get my act together and finish.  What was I thinking? My problem is when I change one thing, like the bedspread, it makes me think about changing something else, like the color of the walls.  Then I think about the artwork and the curtains.  Can you see where this is going?  Actually, the bedrooms almost done, but the master bath needs an update too-although that shouldn’t take too long.  But I’m thinking that room should be painted too…hmm…

Unlike us, Jesus doesn’t have any indecisive thoughts.   It’s very clear, we don’t think the way he does.  “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” (Isaiah 55:8, NLT) When we’re thinking about our troubles, he’s thinking about peace.  “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIT) When we’re thinking about our weakness, he’s thinking about power.  “Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NLT) When we’re thinking ‘It’s hopeless’, he’s thinking about hope. For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11, NLT) When we’re thinking about surviving, he’s thinking about thriving.  “I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. ” (John 10:10, NET) Jesus’ thoughts are hope-filled, over flowing with goodness and life.  With that in mind-what are you thinking?

It’s Time to Change the Station

I wish I would have know it was time to change the station when I couldn’t fall asleep the other night.  Instead, I started thinking  negative thoughts about myself and didn’t quit.  ‘I could have done more to help a student,  I should have called a friend the day before, I should have watched what I said to someone…’ The list of my problems went on and on.  According to my nighttime musings, I couldn’t do anything right.  But instead of trying to think of something else, I let the negativity play over and over in my mind.   Although my thoughts weren’t doing me any good,  I stayed on that station for hours, eventually falling into a restless sleep.

We live in a negative world, and it’s easy to get caught up in it. But that’s not God’s desire for us.  God wants us to continually renew our minds.  Renewing our minds means we let go of all the lies that hold us back and grab hold of the truth. “Don’t become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants—what is good, pleasing, and perfect.” (Romans 12:2, GWT)   God wants us to live a positive and uplifting life. And because he lives inside us, we can overcome negativity.  “For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7, NHEB)

Let’s replace the dark thoughts with good thoughts-ones that bring peace, joy, and strength.  “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (Philippians 4:8, NIV) When the thoughts we’re having are all negative, that means it’s time to change the station.

Love Came Down at Christmas

There’s an icon on Google Maps I appreciate: ‘re-center’.  It helps me when I get a bit off-course; it takes me back to the place I should be.  I need that button even when I’m not in my car!  This is the time of year where things get a bit crazy.   I feel like my mind is going in a million directions at once.  Here’s an example: Last weekend I transported decorative vases filled with glittery stems to the church.  Afterwards, my seats looked like a glitter blizzard had overtaken my car.  Throughout the week I couldn’t stop thinking that my next passenger would have an um….er… decorative bottom.  I’ve also been thinking about the birthday parties my family celebrates this month, the upcoming shopping trips, and the packages that need to be wrapped.  It’s clearly time for me to hit the re-center button.

We all need that button.  Our thoughts, responsibilities, and constant busyness can shift our focus from the real reason we celebrate Christmas.  And when that happens, we need to hit the re-center button.   It takes us back to the place we should be: a place called peace.  “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10, NLT) In quietness we remember Jesus is the reason for the season.  The baby born in Bethlehem so long ago brought everything we need: salvation, love, hope, and peace. “For to us a child is born…and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6-7, NIV) Christmas is the perfect season to celebrate with family and friends.  But it’s also a perfect time for reflection. “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” (Psalm 100:5, NIV) Stopping to re-center this busy season will remind us: Love came down at Christmas… and stayed.

Stay in Peace

Friday evening I found myself in Cleveland traffic during rush hour.  What was I thinking?  This I knew: I needed to stay in peace.  People were definitely in a hurry. There were speedy drivers switching lanes like they were in a Nascar race.   Some drivers pushed for the outside lane and others flew in from the onramp.  I wasn’t in the mood for a  race and dodging the incoming traffic also seemed like a crazy choice.  So I went with the flow: I ignored the cars that zipped through all three lanes, didn’t worry about the stop and go in the right hand lane, and steered clear of the fast lane.  My drive to Pennsylvania in the middle lane that night was so much easier when I didn’t worry about what everyone else was doing.  Keeping my peace (and singing at the top of my lungs) made the drive a pleasant one.

We need to keep our peace at all times.  When we spend our days  worrying about what everyone else is doing, we lose our peace.  Let’s face it, people often do things that upset us, annoy us, or make us angry.  We need to stay focused on God so we can stay in peace.  “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isaiah 26:3 NLT) Wouldn’t we like to sit down and have our bodies and our minds at rest?  Troubling thoughts bring us down.  They are too heavy to carry alone. THAT’S when we need to turn our thinking over to the one who can handle it all.  Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 GWT) Wouldn’t it be nice to sit and relax without any worries?  Let’s stop the overthinking, because I’m pretty sure the couch is calling…

Hold onto the Good

My youngest brother, Bob, is a charter boat captain on Lake Erie.  Most days you’ll find him on the lake with groups of eager fishermen ready for a day of fun.  They’re fishing for walleye and yellow perch.  However, the white perch, invasive to Lake Erie, gets caught too.  This was the case when Bob took my family fishing.  I was amazed at the dozens of times a white perch was on someone’s line.  My brother, who’s an expert in his field, knew exactly what to do.  He’d unhook the offensive fish and immediately drop it back in the water; the large walleye was dropped into the ice cooler.  Bob knew to hold onto the good and let go of the bad.

That’s exactly what we need to do with our thoughts: hold onto the good and let go of the bad.  Too many times we let worries and fears fill our thoughts.  “Can any one of you by worrying add a single day to your life? So do not worry , saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. ” (Matthew 6:27; 31; 33 NIV) God is always with us; therefore, we don’t have to be afraid. “Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV) We can hold on to the good thoughts that remind us God is on our side.  “Do not fear!  Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which he will accomplish for you today…the Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.” (Exodus 14:13-14 NASB) Remember, we don’t have to keep anything negative. Instead, we can hold onto the good.
