Hope for Tomorrow

Aurora-BorealisWhen I look back to my childhood I remember the excitement of the night before Christmas. We all waited in wonder.  Clearly, we had hope for tomorrow.  My four brothers dreamed of bicycles, bb guns, and toy trucks.  I wanted stuffed animals, an Easy Bake Oven, and Barbies.  Unfortunately, more times than I can count, my Barbie found herself strapped to the back of a mini bike.  (It could have been any brother, but Doug was definitely a creative schemer.) For Barbie’s sake and mine, I changed what I asked for the following Christmas.  But on Christmas Eve I still knew, “There was hope for tomorrow.”

The shepherds of long ago looked forward to a new day when they received an unexpected visit deep in the night. “ An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:9-12, NIV)

Even in the midst of our troubles, we can stand firm in the land of hope.  The God who promised the shepherds a Messiah on that long ago night, still remains faithful today. Consistently, “The Lord’s loyal kindness never ceases: His compassions never end. They are fresh every morning; your faithfulness is abundant!” (Lamentations 3:22-23, NET)  Moreover, we can look to the Heavens, and have hope for tomorrow.

Things to do today:

  1. Meditate on your favorite promise of God.
  2. Listen to song: Mercies (New Every Morning) Matt Redman

There’s More Ahead

One of the reasons I like hiking so much is because you know as you move along a trail there’s more ahead.  It makes me hope for the next bend in the trail. Recently I hiked with my niece Tasha in Phoenix, Arizona.  We traversed smooth, sandy paths and sharp-edged trails. We even climbed over 4′ boulders on our way to the summit of a mountain.   Sometimes a curve on the mountain trail displayed a vista view of the valley below.  Other times we’d see ‘The World’s Tallest Cactus,’ (in my opinion), or  the dramatic incline of the trail ahead.  Continually, we relished in the anticipation of seeing something amazing.

The Wise Men of old must have felt the same way.  They knew there was more ahead. Seeing the star in the east and hearing about a baby that would be King of the Jews, they went in search of Him.  Indeed,  “…they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” (Matthew 2:9-10, ESV)

We also have hope of more to come.  Although the world is in a turbulent state, we have the assurance of another world that looks quite different. The weeks leading up to Christmas are a good reminder that everything changed when love entered the world at Jesus’ birth.  So this Advent season, may we be blessed with abundant hope. “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13, NASB)

Things to do today:

  1. Reflect on the real gift of Christmas: Jesus coming into the world.
  2. Listen to this song: Hope in Front of Me (Danney Gokey)

A Reliable Forecast

Purple Montains with Snow
A Reliable Forecast

Sometimes I enjoy the unexpected.  But once in awhile, it would be nice to have a reliable forecast. When people talk about weather in Ohio, I have to laugh.  At one point last week, 22 inches of snow was predicted.  The projected snowfall amounts fluctuated all week until someone posted on Facebook that we could get anywhere from 0-100 inches of snow.  Hilarious. There are times you just don’t know what to expect.  As it turns out, Friday brought rain and 50 degrees in the morning. There were falling temperatures throughout the day, which resulted in icy roads.  Then the day culminated with strong winds and steady snowfall.  It’s hard to know what to expect when the unexpected keeps happening!

Wouldn’t we like a more reliable forecast?  Wouldn’t we like to have something or someone we could rely on?  God is the dependable one.  He is always faithful.  “Your loving-kindness, O Lord, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.” (Psalm 36:5 NASB) We can lean on  God in every area of our lives.  When storms come our way, he is a willing and waiting shelter.  “…He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him… He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. (Psalm 91: 2;4 NLT) We don’t have to be unsure in any situation.  We don’t have to spend our nights worrying about what is going to happen; we can choose to trust our faithful God.  “Those who know your name trust you, O Lord, because you have never deserted those who seek your help.” (Psalm 9:10 GWT) Although tomorrow’s weather is uncertain, with God the forecast is unwavering.

Things to do today:

  1. Let hope arise.
  2. Read a similar blog called God is Faithful and listen to songs ‘You’re an Overcomer’ and ‘I am Not Alone.’

The Gifts I Want to Give

Present with Twinkling Lights: The Gifts I Want to Give
The Gifts I Want to Give

It’s that time of year again when my mind searches for the perfect Christmas gifts.  Truth be told, all the money in the world won’t buy the gifts I want to give.  I’d like to give my friends and family one more day with the ones they are missing: their husband, their dad, their mom, a special friend, a precious child. I’d like to give my friend perfect health-to completely chase out the cancer invading her body.  A friend’s mom keeps forgetting-I’d like to give her a whole day of laughter, love, and joy.  One friend’s husband has a health crisis.  I’d like to give her a  worry-free day.  To the ones who are hurting in unseen ways, I’d like to give you peace.

I can’t give the gifts I want to give,  but God can. He wants to give you comfort. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles…” (2 Corinthians 1:4, NIV) He wants to give you peace. I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart…” (John 14:27 NLT) He wants to give you strength. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1 ESV) Incredibly, he also wants to give you life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV) On the first Christmas so long ago, God gave the best gift ever: Jesus.  With this perfect gift, you not only get another day…you get the gift of forever.

Things to do today:

  1. Accept the freely-offered gifts from God.
  2. Read a similar blog called ‘The Sun Will Shine Again.’ Also, listen to songs ‘One More Day’ and ‘Take Courage.’

Hope is Nearby

The weather in this part of Ohio has been unusually warm for this time of year.  Normally we experience temperatures in the 20’s and 30’s with various amounts of snow and wind.  But this week brought open windows and fresh air, culminating with a day of sunshine and 70 degrees.  People couldn’t help slipping into t-shirts and heading outside.  Spirits lifted as the gray days of winter seemed to fade away.  Unfortunately, the temperatures dropped and the winds picked up overnight, and flying by my window right now I see snow.  It can be a little discouraging to feel spring so close only to have it snatched right back.  But guess what?  As the wind sways the trees and snow sprinkles my landscaping, peeking out of the soil is a spring flower.  Do you know it’s name?  It’s called hope.

Our lives can tell a similar tale.  Sometimes all we see around us is the wind and the cold, but trust this, hope is nearby.  “And you will have confidence, because there is hope; you will be protected and take your rest in safety.  You will lie down, and no one will make you afraid; many will entreat your favor.”  (Job 11:18-19)  We don’t have to fret and pace when things around us look bad.  Instead, we can trust God is planning to come and help.  Psalm 62:5, “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him.”  Be brave and hold fast, because this season is going to end.  “I believe that I shall look upon the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”  (Psalm 27: 13-14) Despite what it’s front of you, stand strong.   And regardless of the lingering days of winter, keep hoping, because spring is sneaking up everywhere.

A Night of Hope

Where does hope come from?  As I was pondering that question, I came across the lyrics to a Christmas song by a group called the Sidewalk Prophets.  Their song ‘Hope Was Born This Night’ explains it better than I can. Here’s a portion of the lyrics.  See what you think:

Tonight I can see a star shine and its splendor fills up the sky
It’s the same that appeared and the wise men revered
When hope was born this night

Out upon the snowy fields there’s a silent peace that heals
And it echoes the grace of our Savior’s embrace
Because hope was born this night

Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, good will to all men
Let all of the world sing the chorus of joy
Because hope was born this night

I can hear the Christmas bells ring as softly as a church choir sings
It’s the song used to praise the Ancient of Days
When hope was born this night

I know hope was born this night
Because Christ was born this night

Everything changed with the miraculous birth in that little manger in Bethlehem.  When Jesus was born on that long ago night, hope exploded into the world.  God’s plans for us have always been good.  He said, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)  This year on Christmas, when you’re unwrapping your presents, don’t forget to unwrap the gift of hope.  And from my house to yours, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him…” Merry Christmas, my friends.

Your Power Source

kumamoto-542410_1920-clouds

Recently, there’s been a few places that have lost power in my area.  A friend woke up to no power in her house and had the challenge of showering and getting ready for work with no lights.  Another friend lost power in the evening, with guests coming the next day.  Her family did their best to clean the house by flashlight, which worked until they got the sweeper out.  Trying to catch up at work on a Saturday doesn’t work either when the power is out and you can’t get in the building.  No electricity means the electronic sensor has no chance of working.  All of us are accustomed to having power in our lives when we need it.

Where can we get power to face the constant challenges we meet each day?  Where can we go to get more strength? If we ask, God will give it to us.  “But you Lord, do not be far from me.  You are my strength, come quickly to help me.” (Psalm 22:19) So if your day starts a little dark, look towards the light.  From Isaiah 33:2, “Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you.  Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.” Isn’t it amazing that we have the ear of the Creator of the Universe AND He is standing ready to help? “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) In essence, the solution to our trials is simple.  Need more power? Go straight to the Source.

Choose Life

forest-1450895_1920-fall-bridgeAs  a teacher, I need certain credentials on my resume.  An employer would be interested in my knowledge of curriculum, instructional practices, and classroom management and discipline.  On the other hand, two of my brothers are carpenters and their resumes look incredibly different from mine. I’m sure they wouldn’t be the least bit interested in state standards.  And trust me, you don’t want me holding a power tool.  (Let’s just say there may have been a time when damage was done…) There’s definitely a skillset to every profession.

So I couldn’t help thinking, God doesn’t need a resume. He is perfectly qualified to do multiple jobs simultaneously.  Here’s one: Store Manager. “The Lord will open for you His good storehouse, the Heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand.” (Deuteronomy 28:12) Here’s two from Psalm 23: Counselor and Chef. “He guides me along the right path for His name sake,” and “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”  Another job: Physician.  “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3) Next job: teacher. “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and  understanding.”  (Proverbs 2:6) Here’s another: Secret Service Agent. “The Lord will keep you from all harm-He will watch over your life. (Psalm 127:1)

God’s job titles are too numerous to recount.  But there’s one that can never be left off any list: Savior.  “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)  His qualifications speak for themselves, everything you ever needed can be found in Christ Jesus.  Simply stated: choose life.

Hope in Every Morning

sunrise-1637376_1280-hope-blogA very unusual phenomenon happened this week in our area-a number of schools were cancelled for the whole day because of fog.  The adults were certainly surprised but the kids were nothing but excited.  Not snow, not freezing rain, but fog kept them at home!  Kids love an extra day off from school.  Could it happen again?  Some teachers told the students it’s unlikely but the students refused to believe it.  Why?  They were filled with hope.

You can be filled with hope too.  Even when you’re in the midst of troubles, health challenges, or financial struggles, hang onto your hope.   Here’s why,  “The Lord always keeps His promises; He is gracious in all He does.  The Lord helps the fallen and lifts those bent beneath their loads.  The eyes of all look to you in hope; you give them their food as they need it. When you open your hand, you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.  The Lord is righteous in everything He does;  He is filled with kindness.  The Lord is close to all who call on Him, yes, to all who call on Him in truth.”  (Psalm 145:13-18)  God is willing and able to meet you right in your place of need.  Be confident of this, a new day is coming and your situation is going to get better.  “The faithful love of the Lord never ends!  His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning.  I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in Him!  The Lord is good to those who depend on Him, to those who search for Him.  It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.'”  (Lamentations 3:22-26)  So take a deep breath, lean in, and trust the One who can handle all you are facing.  And keep hoping, because you never know what the morning will bring.

Perfect Timing

field-for-blogNone of us like to be kept waiting.  We are easily frustrated by long check out lines, slow traffic patterns, and even the popcorn we just put in the microwave seems to takes too long.  But there’s a group of people who know a little something about waiting: American farmers.  They prepare the land, sow the seed, irrigate, fertilize, and then patiently wait.  I know a few farmers and I’ve never seen one try to make it rain, (but I would absolutely video tape it if they did).  Farmers know what to do to get good results: work hard every day, put in a FULL day, use techniques to ensure success, then step back and wait for the harvest. From Galatians 6:9, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Let’s face it, farmers know how to wait.

Do we?  How many times do we try to speed up events in our lives instead of letting them unfold naturally?  In every situation, we need to do all we are able, then step back and allow God’s timing to take place.  From Psalm 130:5-6, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning…”  What have you been hoping for, longing for, waiting for…?  Even if it’s taking a long time, do all that you know to do, then expect that something good is going to happen.  You can trust that God knows a thing or two about timing. From Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…”  So hold tight, wait patiently, and trust God, because His timing is perfect.
