Recently, while walking on a trail along the Huron River, I watched an enormous eagle fly overhead. At one point, he flew directly above me and his large wingspan cast a shadow over me. I imagine God is high above us constantly watching too. I couldn’t help but ponder the eagle’s qualities. His ability to rise above a storm, his keen eyesight, and his speed in flight to name a few. But one quality always stands out for me: the way he cares and protects his eaglets. The eagle couple build their nest high in the trees to avoid predators. Also, they take turns watching over the nest, rarely leaving the eaglets alone. If it’s cold, they shelter the babies in their wings. For the eaglets, being in the shadow of their parent is a special blessing.
Thankfully, we have a watchful parent too. God does not take His eyes off His children. “The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm—He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.“ (Psalm 121:5-8, NIV) Unfortunately, there are always things in our lives that challenge us. These problems can come out of nowhere and leave us feeling vulnerable. But we have the assurance that our Heavenly Father misses nothing; His protection never ends. “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” (Psalm 91:4, NIV) Let’s stay safely in the shadow of our Father.
