There is Always a Way Through

Making forward progress...

Recently, I went hiking in the mountains in Phoenix, Arizona with my brother and niece.  We found that it could be difficult to make forward progress!  We went out every day and each trail offered new challenges and different mountain views.  Sometimes we walked alongside towering saguaro cactus and other days the trail was dusty and full of jagged rocks.   On top of that, one park contained every shape and size of boulder, a seemingly brown landscape without greenery.  The trail was difficult to follow and we often found ourselves backtracking to find the main path. The size of the rocks and the incline of the mountain made it hard to find places that allowed passage.  However, with a heart full of determination, we found there was always a way through.  And on the other side, we found the bright sunshine and blue skies again.

Making Forward Progress

Life has a way of impeding our forward progress too. Sometimes were in a place where there is a rock AND a hard place surrounding us.  But remember, there is always a way through.  Finding the way forward can be tricky, but we don’t have to find it in our own strength.  God says, “I will lead the blind on roads they have never known; I will guide them on paths they have never traveled. Their road is dark and rough, but I will give light to keep them from stumbling. This is my solemn promise. ” (Isaiah 42:16, CEV)  That means He may take you forward in a way you weren’t expecting, but here’s the key: you’re moving forward. Keep leaning on God, because on the other side, there’s bright sunshine and blue skies.

Perfectly Designed

Waterfall flowing into a gorge
Rainbow Bridge and Falls, Watkins Glen State Park

Recently I had the opportunity to hike in Watkins Glen State Park, located in New York’s Finger Lakes region.  It didn’t take long to see it was best to stay on the path.  The 2 mile trail ran through a narrow gorge  and boasted 19 waterfalls and over 800 stone steps.  The trail led us within 4 feet of the river and peaked over 1,000 feet above it.  There were multiple stone bridges,  a spiral staircase encased in rock, steep towering cliffs, and natural and manmade trails.  On our 2 hour hike through the gorge, we trusted the unique and helpful trail.  It was perfectly designed for viewing incredible rock formations, experiencing beautiful waterfalls, and keeping all hikers safe (as long as we stayed on the trail).

God has a path for us to follow too.  It is perfectly designed; we just need to trust him as we walk it out.  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV)    We don’t have to fight the problems that come against us; God will gladly step in to help.  When our days are difficult and we are standing between a rock and a hard place, he makes a way for us. “I myself will prepare your way, leveling mountains and hills. I will break down bronze gates and smash their iron bars.” (Isaiah 45: 2, GNT)  God’s perfectly designed path is unique for each of us, where we can marvel at its beauty and experience delight along the way.  “You lead me in the path of life; I experience absolute joy in your presence; you always give me sheer delight. ” (Psalm 16:11, NET) Here’s the key: stay on the path.

Don’t Quit Now, You Can Do This

I recently went to Paddle and Climb, a store in downtown Sandusky that rents paddleboards and kayaks, sells sporting equipment and clothes, and has a 32′ rock wall for climbing.  That was the purpose of my birthday outing with friends, to scale the wall, (‘Rocky’ music playing in your head right now would be appropriate).  Chad helped us that day and gave good advice, helpful tips, and encouragement along the way.  One rock face was particularly challenging for me, and I didn’t make it to the top.  When I was tired and ready to give up, Chad said, “Don’t quit now, you can do this.” He even climbed with me, encouraging me as I went.  With the support of my helpful guide, I successfully made it to the top.

The challenges we face in life can make us feel like quitting too.  But we don’t have to face any of them alone!  God wants to walk beside us: giving advice, helpful tips, and encouragement along the way.  The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame…” (Isaiah 58:11, NIV) When we’re not sure what to do next, we can listen for his voice.  “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'” (Isaiah 30:21, NIV) Sometimes we’re just tired and feel we don’t have what it takes to keep going.  God has a remedy for those days too. “The LORD gives strength to those who are weary. Even young people get tired, then stumble and fall. But those who trust the LORD will find new strength. They will be strong like eagles soaring upward on wings; they will walk and run without getting tired. ” (Isaiah 40:29-31, CEV) With the support of our helpful guide, we can keep going!

Find the Higher Ground

My family planned a week-long outing at one of our favorite campgrounds.  Upon arrival, I discovered the road leading into the campground was under six feet of water.   There is a road that leads out of the campground, but when I checked, it was flooded too. What to do now?  Four campers were on the way and we needed to find higher ground.  As it turned out, there was an access road at the back of the campground.  Fortunately, it was at a higher elevation.  When the campers arrived, I was uneasy about staying.  Despite my reservations, my brother informed me all the water would be gone in a day and the sun would even dry the water near our campers.  To my delight, he was right. It turns out that camping on higher ground has its benefits.

God wants to lead us to higher ground too.  He knows the world will bring us trouble, but he wants to replace the problems with peace.  “I have told you this so that through me you will have peace.  In the world you’ll have trouble, but be courageous-I’ve overcome the world!”  (John 16:33 ISV)  When we find ourselves facing a flood, we need God to guide us to higher ground.  “The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.  I will advise you and watch over you.'” (Psalm 32:8 NLT)   Unexpected and unpleasant circumstances can invade our days.  But even during the most challenging times of our lives, God’s plan for our good is unchanging.  “‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the LORD, who has compassion on you.” (Isaiah 54:10 NIV)  Let’s stay in peace when the waters rise.  And by all means, let’s find the road that leads to higher ground.

The Inside Scoop

On a recent trip to Maui, my friends and I decided to drive the famous Hana Highway.  It’s a twisting, winding, and narrow road that crosses 46 bridges that are one lane wide.  The road contains hundreds of hairpin curves.  As you enter these ‘no-visibility’ bends in the road, you must blow your horn to warn oncoming traffic.  There are mile-markers along the way, yet this famous highway is void of signs to alert tourists to Black Sand Beach,  numerous flowing waterfalls, or bamboo  hiking trails.  Luckily, someone told us about buying a ‘Road to Hana Highway CD.’  This gave us an inside scoop on a perfect day: when to keep going, when to slow down, and when to stop and enjoy.  Our experience that day was immeasurably better with guidance!

Similarly, God wants to guide us every day.  We don’t have to blindly navigate the unexpected twists and turns of life. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) It’s true sometimes we just don’t know which way to go, but we can get help.  “I’ll help the blind walk, even on a road they do not know; I’ll guide them in directions they do not know.  I’ll turn the dark places into light in front of them, and the rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I won’t abandon them.” (Isaiah 42:16)  In challenging times, sometimes all we see are the mile markers; however, we have the inside scoop on how to navigate the road.  “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.”  (Isaiah 48:17)  With that in mind, let’s just be sure we’re following the right signs.

Spring Ahead

Not surprisingly, we’ve had another shift in weather in northwest Ohio.  We had fierce winds the other night and those winds left behind colder temperatures and an obvious chill in the air.  My furnace is running constantly, trying to keep up with the sudden change.  Despite the cold, when I look out my windows the sun is shining brightly.  And even though there was snow on the ground this morning, I can see the tiniest buds sneaking out on the branches of the trees in my yard.  Spring is on the way.

How many of us, through trials and challenges, have felt like winter has come to stay?  Who’s looking for a change in your circumstances; who’s hoping for spring?  We have assurance that the tough times in our lives are not going to last.  “See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.  Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.” (Song of Solomon 2:11-12)  We don’t need to look at all the things around us that aren’t perfect, we can fix our eyes on the things that give us hope.  “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.”  (Proverbs 4:25)  Our circumstances will try to hold us back; however, God leads us forward to  beautiful pathways.  “You’re blessed when you stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God.  You’re best when you follow His directions, doing your best t0 find Him. (Psalm 119:1-2)  The Earth is still moving around the sun, so let’s keep moving too.  Let’s leave winter behind and walk into the new season God has planned for us.

Sparkling with Possibility

One of my closest friends just retired this week from the United States Army.  Her career started as an inexperienced Second Lieutenant and peaked as a Colonel, and reflecting on its entirety, I couldn’t be more proud.  Her combat boots saw action in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia.  In the United States, those boots touched numerous military bases, including the headquarters of the Department of Defense, the Pentagon itself.  But as of this week, her life is about to change.  Drastically.  She must have dozens of questions: What will I do?  Where will I go?  What’s next?

We all go through times of transition.  Sometimes we know change is coming and other times we are blindsided by it.  Either way, it might help to know God saw it coming and is planning to help.  Psalm 121:8, “The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in.”  Wherever you’re headed, God has you covered.  He’s not going to abandon you in this time of transition.  God is even instructing His angels to guide you in this change.  “Look, I’m sending an angel before you to protect you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared.” (Exodus 23:20) God is arranging things in your favor!  You don’t have to be worried or afraid.  You can take a deep breath and choose to trust.  Instead of looking back, look forward-then you can embrace the beauty in this next season.  “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”  (Ecclesiastes 3:11)  Here’s my suggestion: grab a blanket, sit back, and expect to be amazed.  Here’s why: the future before you is a fireworks display: exploding with beauty, bathed in light, and sparkling with possibility.

Look for the Light

Recently, my mom and I were driving along and suddenly came upon a dense fog.  The visibility was better when we were in populated areas with a lot of lights, but it decreased as we headed towards the country roads.  It was strange to have a destination in mind, but not be able to see too far ahead.  We kept peering through the darkness to see if we recognized landmarks and strained to read the road signs.  To our surprise, as we drove down a quiet country road, suddenly the fog lifted and we could see clearly.  It was quite a relief to see the entire road in front of us and even look into the distance and see exactly where we were headed.

Life can be that way at times.  We’re headed into a bright future and suddenly there’s an unexpected change and we’re not sure which way to turn.  Things can seem dark all around us, but it’s not going to stay that way.  “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5) When all seems lost, God promises to lead us. “I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth.  These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.” (Isaiah 42:16) Even if our world is a bit foggy right now, we can keep moving forward.  We have this assurance: “…light will come bursting in.” (Psalm 114:4) Let’s keep our hopes up and our eyes on the road, because there’s light just around the corner.

A Strong Tower

In the movie ‘Finding Nemo,’ there’s a funny scene where a group of fish are going to school.  A few of the younger fish see a boat in the distance and wonder what it could be.  One thinks he knows and says it’s called a butt.  In the scene, they dare each other to swim out and touch it.  (Don’t judge me, I didn’t write the movie).  Since then, when I swim at a beach with my niece, we try to swim all the way out to the ‘butt’, (AKA the buoy).  It’s not a simple feat.  The distance to the buoy makes it difficult and the waves moving to shore are pushing against us.  We press on and keep the buoy in sight, yelling encouragement to each other as we go.  As we come close to it, it’s bobbing all over in the water, so it’s hard to touch.  Finally successful, one of us yells, “I touched the butt!”

Unlike a swaying buoy, God is immovable.  From Proverbs 18:10, “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”  He doesn’t change. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)   We all have goals in life.  However, they need to take us in the same direction where God is standing.  Think of God as a lighthouse-full of endless light giving us direction in the storms of life.  “The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.  I will advise you and watch over you.'” (Psalms 32:8) Unfortunately, there are going to be ‘waves’ that will come against us.  But let’s press on and keep our eyes on the Lighthouse, because it’s up ahead-and it’s not moving.

Heavenly Light

forest-984413_1920Early in the morning as I drive to work each day, I see someone walking their dog.  It’s pitch black outside, and more than a little chilly that time of day, and yet someone is faithfully walking the family pet.  The best part about seeing the pair is watching as the flashlight being carried carves a path of light in the darkness.  Every step their feet, (and paws), takes is illuminated by one small flashlight.  “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1:5)

As we move throughout our days we encounter areas where everything seems dark.  But Jesus gave us a promise we can hold onto.  “When Jesus spoke again to the people He said, ‘I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'” (John 8:12) That’s a pretty good deal: the light of life.  There’s security in knowing we have light for everyday of our lives. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)  Helen Keller said, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.” So its seems we have a choice, we can choose light.

What is light anyways? It’s a river flowing with all the good things God wants in our lives: love, joy, peace, and kindness, and so much more…  God has an abundance of light planned just for you. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…” (James 1:17)  Don’t ever be distracted by the shadows around you, God’s ‘flashlight’ is fully charged, so you can always see your way in the dark.
