Watch out for the Potholes

Watch out for the Potholes

I push mow my elderly neighbor’s lawn.  It’s a beautiful, thick lawn that loves to grow and takes about 45 minutes to mow.  I enjoy being outside so I really don’t mind.  But I do mind that there are around 4-5 holes in her yard that are difficult to see because of the thick grass.  Invariably, I step in at least one each time I mow.  My ankles do not enjoy this added feature of lawn care! They end up hurting me all week long. It would help if I’d  pay more attention and watch for the holes, but they seem to continually  sneak up on me. I wish someone would have told me to watch out for the potholes.

Likewise, if we’re not careful, life can trip us up.   Negative thoughts have a way of sneaking up on us, and before we realize it: worry and fear have moved in.  When this happens, our own thoughts hold us down.  They keep us from living a peaceful life.  God wants to help with this.  “Don’t be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think…” (Romans 12:2, CEV) Trusting God in our difficult situations is a great place to start.  When we look to him, we begin to feel his peace.  “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isaiah 26:3, NLT). Life offers plenty of chances for worry to sneak into our thoughts.  God has an answer for each one.  Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel. “(Philippians 4:6-7, CEV) My advice: watch out for the potholes!

Things to do today:

  1. Call out to God as soon as you start to worry.

Lessons From a 4 Year-Old

My family spent a fun week camping at my brother’s-swimming in the pool, fishing and tubing on Lake Erie, and visiting Kelly’s Island. My nephew Ben participated in every activity. Because of this, I learned a few simple lessons.  Ben took his floatie off in water over his head so he could try swimming to his mom and grandma.

Lesson 1-It’s okay to trust when you’re surrounded by love and protection He climbed right onto the inner tube in the middle of Lake Erie knowing his Uncle Bob would drive the boat slow so he wouldn’t fall in.

Lesson 2-You don’t have to be afraid when you’re in good hands. Ben fell asleep beside me sitting on the bow of our moving boat.

Lesson 3-You can rest when you know someone is watching over you.

These lessons can apply to all areas of our lives.

Lesson 1-It’s okay to trust when you’re surrounded by love and protection. We don’t have to let the trials of life overtake us.  When we’re in over our heads, we can choose to trust God.  “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, CSB)

Lesson 2-You don’t have to be afraid when you’re in good hands. There are so many things in this life that can make us afraid.  But we are safe with God.  “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, CSB)

Lesson 3-You can rest when you know someone is watching over you.  It’s hard to feel peace when troubles pull us down.  But we don’t have to face one day alone.  “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8 NIV) Questions? See a 4 year-old for answers.

You’re Stronger Than You Think

Mountains with Evergreen Trees: You're Stronger Than You Think
You’re Stronger Than You Think

The first step in building a house is making sure the foundation is strong. When my youngest brother was building his house, we all went to help the day the basement walls were to be poured. As it turned out, there had been heavy rains the day before and the cement truck had to stay in the driveway.  That complicated things because the chute wasn’t long enough for the cement to pour the farthest walls. This meant the cement had to be carried in 5 gallon buckets by manpower, or in my case, womanpower.  It turns out I was stronger than I thought.  The cement guy filled the buckets and handed them to us, I lugged mine across the wide expanse of the floor, perhaps a bit slower than the men. Even though the task was difficult, pulling on my inner strength kept me going.

Life has a way of sending us unexpected burdens.  Things can come at us that seem impossible to face; but we are stronger than we think.  As we rely on the strength of God, our inner resilience rises.  This allows us to face the difficult days and remain standing.  “The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, And makes me walk on my high places.” (Habakkuk 3:19 NASB)  God gives us the ability to face the tough days, not barely making it, but standing steadfast in the storm.  We can persevere even when the storms are coming against us; we’ve got what it takes to hang in there.  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm…” (Ephesians 6:10-11 NASB) Even on the tough days, let’s keep standing, because we’re stronger than we think.

Things to do today:

  1. Ask God to increase your strength to face the day.

Unconditional

There’s a children’s book I read to my nephew called, No, David!   In the book, a carefree 4 year-old is relentless in his pursuit of fun.  Unfortunately, his boisterous ways breaks a favorite vase. He also scribbles on the walls in purple crayon and sticks most of his supper up his nose.  Arguably, his most humorous transgression was running down the sidewalk naked.  (WARNING: Do not try this at home! ) Yet even with his multiple infractions, the day ends perfectly.  We see his mom gently holding David, softly whispering, “I love you.”   Thankfully, David is not defined by his many mistakes, but by the unconditional love of his mother.

Our days can be riddled with problems too.  We may have relationship, health, or financial issues.  But at the end of the day, we are not defined by our challenges.  God calls us His own. “But now, this is what the Lord says…’Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.'” (Isaiah 43:1) Fortunately, God constantly watches over His children.  “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to his heart; He gently leads those that have young.” We are not facing any day alone; we always have a Helper in the trying times. “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you.'” (Isaiah 41:13)  Therefore, we can start each day by turning over our worries, our problems, and our pain.  We can move through the day leaning into a loving God.  Lastly, as the day ends, we can listen for His gentle voice softly whispering, “I love you.” So let’s walk in perfect peace each day, for we have the unconditional love of our Father.

Straight Towards the Light

My class walked to the library early this morning in a light rain with warm air.  Since we weren’t dealing with a cold wind and pelting, unforgiving rain, it was a bit of an adventure.  About an hour later, however, everything changed.  The next class walked in a thick fog with significantly colder air.  That walk to the library wasn’t enjoyable; we put our heads down and marched determinedly on.  Thankfully, the cool and damp air was soon forgotten in the light and warmth of the library.

Life has a way of throwing unwanted surprises at us too.  One minute we’re walking along just fine and in the next instant we are facing a sickness, a loss, or a challenge that seems too much to bear.  But similar to the library, we can look to the Light for rescue.  Jesus said, “I am the world’s Light; no one who follows Me stumbles around in the darkness.  I provide plenty of light to live in.”  (John 8:12)  Truth be told, we can have shelter from every storm. “For He will hide me in His shelter in time of trouble, He will conceal me in the cover of His tent; and set me high upon a rock.”  (Psalm 27:5)  We don’t have to be afraid on the dark days, because we are protected.  “God is our refuge and strength, a tested help in times of trouble.  And so we need not fear even if the world blows up and the mountains crumble into the sea.” In the middle of a storm? Put your head down and walk straight towards the Light, because once you step in, you’ll be surrounded by God’s warmth and protection.

Strong Hands

Recently I saw a movie that had God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit as an integral part of the storyline.  They each interacted with the main character, (Mackenzie), and supported him in his heartache and pain.  Many scenes gripped my heart and sent my emotions on a roller coaster ride.  But one scene in particular continues to visit my thoughts.  Mackenzie steps out of a small boat and literally walks on the water with Jesus.  Later, when he tries it again, instead of walking on the water, he sloshes through it.  He looks back at Jesus in confusion.  Jesus lovingly says, “This always works better when we do it together, don’t you think?”  (Good point to ponder.)

How often do we try to face difficult situations alone?  Why don’t we take a minute to remember that Jesus is always wanting to walk through the storms with us?  Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)  God sees the storms long before they reach us, and He’s already dealt with them.  “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)  When the storms come, we don’t have to stand out in the rain alone.  Let’s go ahead and grab hold of God’s hand, because He’s absolutely not letting go of ours.

Amazingly Possible

When I’m in a Zumba class, sometimes I don’t think I’ll make it all the way to the end.  I’ll cruise through the warm-up, make it through 3 or 4 songs, and then somewhere in the middle I question my sanity for being there.  (To be completely honest, there have been people who have questioned my sanity in other areas of my life, but that’s another story…) I know I’m not alone in my exhaustion, because I see people glancing at the clock and peeking at their watches.  Just when I’m thinking of an excuse to sneak out of class, I hear my favorite words, “Last song.”  It’s amazing how that changes my attitude.  Instead of quitting, I finished!

In the testing times of life, you can keep going too.  God is right there with you, giving you strength.  Isaiah 40:28-31, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” You can get through this.  Your current challenge may seem insurmountable, but God has brilliant ways to deal with the impossible.  Jesus said, “All things are possible for him who believes.” (Mark 9:23) So take some advice from Moses, who knew a thing or two about impossible situations, “Don’t be afraid.  Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today.” (Exodus 14:13)

An Ever-Present Help

Sometimes it seems like everyone I know is fighting a battle.  Most of the battles are fierce, knock-down, and drawn-out fights.  I have a friend who is battling a rare form of cancer, one who is caring for an ailing mother, and another one who is grieving the loss of a parent.  Unfortunately, there are so many others who are stressed in one way or another.   Within these struggles, we can feel lonely; no one really understands our heartache, our worry, our pain.  Sometimes we feel like we are standing alone on the battlefield and the enemy before us is too big.  That’s simply not true.  We are never going into any battle alone.  Ever.

Let this sink deeply into all the tired, afraid, and weary places in your thinking: you are never alone God is always with you.  “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)  He loves you so much.  God is never going to leave you alone in a fight.  Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you or forsake you.”  When life is coming at you with no end in sight, don’t ever feel you have to face it on your own.  Here’s the truth: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) What does the phrase ‘The odds are stacked in your favor’ mean?  Simply put: The Creator of the Universe is on your side.

You Can Do This!

I bought a bicycle like they use in Spin Classes at the gym.  You know, the classes where all the participants look like they’ve been chiseled out of granite?  Yep, I have that bike.  It’s actually pretty hilarious as my body feels like it was formed from a large box of Play Doh.  As I ride, I watch a Spin Class video and I think the instructor can read my mind.  Just when I am thinking I might stop she says, “Don’t quit now!  You can do this!” So I keep going.  When I think I am not going to make it to the end, she says, “Come on, you’re an athlete, show us how it’s done!” (For some reason Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Glory Days’ is going through my mind…) I’m happy to say with the extra encouragement I usually make it through the workout, but I keep hoping it’s going to get a little easier.

We have to keep going on the tough days of our lives too.  Fortunately, the Bible is rich in encouragement.  We need to grab ahold of all that support God has laid out for us.  Here’s some: “But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” (2 Chronicles 15:7)  Or from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”  Each of us has those tough times that last longer than they should.  Amazingly, we don’t have to keep moving in our own strength. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)  Are the odds stacked against you? Listen closely, because God is saying, “Don’t quit now!  You can do this!”

Keep Looking Up

gold-candleI believe in angels.  One of the reasons I believe is related to the car  accident I had about 8 years ago.  Most of that night remains a blur;  I didn’t hear the sirens of the ambulance, the State Highway Patrol, or the sheriff’s car that arrived at the scene.  But there are 3 comments I distinctly remember.  From the patrol officer on duty, “I can’t believe I am getting to talk to you.  We always get called out for fatalities on that road.”  The Emergency Room doctor said, “You must have someone watching over you.”  Lastly, the EMT driving the ambulance, “You must have angels watching over you.” Psalm 91:11-12 agrees, “For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;  they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”

There is comfort in knowing God is watching over us.  Psalm 121:8, “The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever.” It’s easy to get overwhelmed when we look at the world and the many problems in it.  But we don’t have to spend one minute worrying, being fearful, or in distress.  “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Don’t be afraid.  I’ll help you.'”  We can shift our perspective and look at life from a higher angle.  Psalm 121:1, “I will lift up my eyes to the  hills, from where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord,  who made heaven and earth.”  Don’t walk through your life being downcast; stay focused on things above.  Trust me, the view is always better when you’re looking up.
