Category Archives: Brighter Days Ahead

Suddenly is Coming

My daisies suddenly burst open.  Truthfully, the  buds had been taking shape for days. Most of the year the daisies are just nice green plants, but for a month every year, they are stunning.  The day I planted the small flowers I hoped for the best.  Placing them gently in the ground, I gave them food and water.    On a consistent schedule, I fed them, (not bacon an eggs, but you know, plant food).  Although there were time I wondered if they’d make it, today they’re very strong.  Through the years the flowers have multiplied.  And then suddenly, they are glorious to behold.

Our lives are unfolding in the same way.  It takes a long time to reach our fullest potential.  Fortunately, we have a Master Gardener watching over us.   “Sing about a fruitful vineyard: I, the Lord, watch over it; I water it continually.  I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.”  (Isaiah 27:2-3)  There are days when we don’t feel it, but our strength is growing.  God is diligent towards His children.  “The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you at dry and restoring your strength.  You will be a well-watered garden, like an ever flowing spring.”  (Isaiah 58:11) Waiting takes patience, but there is beauty in our future.  “And this is going to be a glorious unfolding.  Just you wait and see and you will be amazed.  You’ve just got to believe the story is so far from over; So hold on to every promise God has made to us.  And watch this glorious unfolding…”  (Song: Glorious Unfolding by Steven Curtis Chapman)  God’s been planning good things for a long time.  In an instant, we’ll see His beauty unfold.  “I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. (Isaiah 48:3)

Great Expectations

Hope is the joyful expectation that something good is about to happen.  I couldn’t help thinking about hope while sitting at a graduation party tonight while numerous conversations played around me.  They were filled with plans of the future, loaded with lofty goals and big dreams.  All the seniors were looking ahead, making plans to find their place in this great big world.  The theme throughout the party: an expectation of a bright and exciting future.  God couldn’t agree more.  “‘For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future.'” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Here’s good news: God planned for each of us to have hope!  Even on the tough days, we can keep hoping.  “But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love.  We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.  In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name.  May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” (Psalm 33:18, 20-22) The beauty of being a child of God is knowing He hears us when we pray.  Therefore, we can be flooded with hope!  “Lord, hear me as I pray; pay attention to my groaning… Listen to my voice in the morning, LordEach morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly. (Psalm 5:1-3) Just like the seniors, we can let go of the past and grab onto a bright and exciting future.   Furthermore, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

Confident Expectation

The flowers I planted today were nice, but they hold no comparison to their future glory.  Right now they’re a bit sparse, a little droopy, and a bit on the small side.  Don’t get me wrong, the yellow flowers (coreopsis, yarrow, and petunias) on my front porch have already added a ‘touch of color.’ The red geraniums are taking a stand under the pergola of the back porch.  However, I am expecting more color as summer approaches.  My flowers need the basics: sun, water, and perhaps a sprinkling of Miracle-Gro.  But their greatest need: just a little more time.

Sometimes our circumstances need a little more time too.  But who wants to wait for situations to improve?  And what’s so great about waiting?  Isaiah 40:31, “…but they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”  (Okay, so strength and endless energy, that sounds pretty great.)   Even if the waiting seems endless, stay strong!  “For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.  Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. (Habakkuk 2:3) The real question then: ‘How should we wait?’   We should wait with confident expectation because there are better days ahead. Psalms 27:31, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Here’s the truth: God knows your address, so with confident expectation you can be sure His goodness will arrive right on time.

The Sun Will Shine Again

The children’s’ song “Rain, Rain Go Away” is appropriate for my area of the country.  Heavy and continual storms lingered for days, leaving roads closed, fields underwater, and rivers pushing over their banks.  Persistent gray skies affect the temperament of everyone.  There’s an attitude that sneaks in and causes us to want to hide under the covers until the storms pass.  After all, who wants to face another day of running through the rain or fight yet another losing battle with a windblown umbrella?  Watching the rain fly by my window makes me think it will never end.  Fortunately, we all know the sun will shine again.

Similarly, when we’re in the middle of a storm in our personal lives, we can be sure the sun is going to shine on us again too.  The storm will not last, so we keep looking forward.  “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”  (2 Corinthians 4:18)   Unfortunately, we are all going to experience storms in our lives.  Fortunately, God is our constant protection.  “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” (Psalm 46:1-3) Hold tight in the storm, because God has a beautiful future planned with you in mind“He has made everything beautiful in its time…no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”  (Ecclesiastes 3:11)  Are there troubled skies around you?  You can put the umbrella away, because it’s time for the sun to shine again.

A Happy Ending

Recently, I had the opportunity to paint an accent wall in a teenager’s room with a chevron design (think Charlie Brown’s t-shirt, with pink and gray for the colors). On another wall I painted Disney quotes, which brought to mind that sometimes we need to change our outlook on life.  A few of the phrases were, “…because hakuna matata (translation: ‘no worries…’) and the bear necessities will always be our guide…” My personal favorite was “We believe in happy endings.” Although these lines are from Disney movies, they carry a good message.

We have many things in our lives that can cause us to be fearful.  The Lion King’s ‘hakuna matata’ can remind us we don’t have to worry.  Instead, we can place our trust in the One who is able to protect us and watch over us.  “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” (Psalm 94:1. ) In the movie The Jungle Book, we’re told when we let go of our worries and our strife, we will have the bare necessities of life.   Matthew 6:34 refers to worrying about your life too. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”  In Disney’s Tangled, they favor a happy ending.  (I am particularly fond of them myself.)  Jesus is too!  From John 14:2-3, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”  Jesus is preparing Heaven for us.  Now that is EXACTLY my idea of a happy ending.

A Fresh Start

When my large family celebrates Christmas together, we generate alot of trash.  After the gifts are opened, the living room looks like a hurricane came through.  There are boxes, paper, cardboard, and tissue paper strewn all over the floor, chairs, and sometimes on people (mostly from my brothers throwing paper ‘bombs’ at me).  Don’t get me started on the kitchen, as food is consumed at a rapid rate and the trash can gets filled and the bag replaced repeatedly throughout the day.  When the parties are over and the last eggroll is eaten, we sort the things we recycle from the things we call trash.  Either way, it all gets hauled out.

As the New Year approaches, we all need to get rid of the trash we’ve been hanging onto.   Sometimes we keep anger, bitterness, disappointments, or worries longer than we should.  God thinks so too. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19) God doesn’t want us to hang onto things which don’t bring light and joy to our future.  He wants to make our future bright.  “But this I call to mind and, therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:21-23) God wants to give us a fresh and beautiful beginning.  We can do our part by letting go of the old and looking forward to the next season God has for us.  After all, “There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.” (Proverbs 23:18) Let’s stick with God’s Plan A: a bright and hope-filled New Year.

Unpack Your Bags

rays-1345745_1920-in-fall-treesOne year, my family took a vacation to Lake Tahoe.   We lugged a variety of suitcases and backpacks through the airport to check-in.  As we stood in the long line waiting,  we watched as dozens of bags were weighed, identifications shown, and seat assignments given.  When we finally got to the front of the line, they weighed my sister-in-law’s bag and discovered it was too heavy to meet the weight requirements.  So right there in front of everyone she had to open her luggage and lighten the load.  Digging through well-packed clothes, carefully placed shoes, and strategically placed accessories, she decided what items would be left behind.  Quite frankly, she really wanted to take it all with her.

Our lives can follow a similar pattern.  Sometimes we hold on to things that we really don’t need in our future: anger, resentment, guilt, shame, or unforgiveness.  It’s time to lighten the load.  Isaiah 48:18-19, “Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”  God wants you to have a fresh start.  He wants to lead you to a future filled with hope, expectation, and new possibilities. “From now on I will tell you new things, of hidden things unknown to you.  They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today.”  So let go of that heavy baggage and grab ahold of the promise God has for you, “The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter until the full light of day.”  (Proverbs 4:18) Take that first step, but put your sunglasses on, because your future is shining brightly.

Joy in the Morning

sunbeam-1555249_1920-sunriseHave you ever tried to restore an old piece of furniture?  It’s not easy. This summer my niece found an old beat-up dresser at a barn sale.  Somehow that old dusty, paint-peeling specimen of furniture found its way into my garage.  The first thing I did was wipe the cobwebs and dust it off to see what it looked like underneath, (not a lot better, truth be told).  The hinges were crooked, the paint was peeling, and some of the handles were missing.  So I scraped, sanded, and scrubbed it; then began the slow process of painting it layer by layer.  It took awhile and I had to backtrack a few times, but today the sparkling white dresser sits in my niece’s bedroom with shiny new handles and a whole new outlook on life.

Perhaps there are areas in your life that need attention: old scars, difficult memories, pain too deep to be seen.  God sees every single thing that brings you down.  “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”  (Psalm 147:3)  In Jeremiah 30:17 it says, “For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord.”  God’s heart is for you.   From Isaiah 61:7, “Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance.  And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.” God wants to bring change to all the broken places in your life, and everything He touches becomes beautiful.  So take heart, my friend,  “Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5)

Changing Perspectives

hiking-blogThe Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain is quite a climb.  While navigating the mountain I came across narrow, pebbled-filled paths, boulders that I had to literally crawl over, and hundreds of larger rocks where I stepped carefully as I passed over them.  Many challenges warred with the goal of reaching the top: the relentless heat in Phoenix, the weight of the water bottles that absolutely must be carried, and the lack of visual confirmation that any progress was being made. The hike to the summit seemed endless as every thought told me to give up: it’s just too hard, it’s just too far, and I just can’t do this.  Then suddenly it happened, I came to the end of the trail and all that went before me seemed trivial: my perspective changed when I was standing at the top.

Our journey through life is like this.  We have challenges we must face, hardships that slow us down, and times we want to quit.  II Chronicles 15:7 says, “But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.”  When the path seems endless, keep going.  When you can’t see your way to the other side of the problem, keep going.  When it seems this is too much for one person to handle, keep going.  Philippians 4:13 assures us, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”  Even if the mountain before you looks too big for you, press on; you have what it takes to get through this.  Tap into that inner strength that comes directly from God.  And when you reach the top, let go of all those troubles that tried to stop you, and grab onto the amazing place where you’ll be standing.

It’s All Coming Together

sunrise-for blogFor my mom’s 60th birthday, I wanted to do something really special for her so I decided to sew her a quilt.  There was only one small glitch in my lofty plan: I didn’t know how to sew.  Luckily, I knew someone who did.  The Family and Consumer Science Teacher (Home Ec to me), was an expert.  She opened her classroom for sewing nights and patiently taught me each step.  Quilters seem to have their own foreign language.  When I heard ‘Stitch in the ditch” I thought it was a reference to where I should throw the pitiful-looking thing I was making.  My early work was not impressive!  Sometimes I’d look at those frayed squares and crooked stitches and doubt that it was going to develop into something worth making.  The waiting for a completed project seemed endless.  Yet surprisingly, little by little, something quite lovely began to take shape.  And finally, the completed work became a beautiful and treasured gift.

Your life can follow a similar pattern.  Sometimes you look at an individual day and wonder if the next will be better.  Waiting for a relationship to improve, bills to be paid, or a job issue to get resolved can overwhelm your days.  But rest assured, your life is going to get better.  God is working behind the scenes right now to improve your circumstances.  “I believe I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:13-14)  You can be sure there are brighter days right around the corner; so keep going, keep waiting, and start expecting something good to happen.  Ecclesiastes 3:11 assures us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time…” There may be a lot of frayed places in your life, but those loose ends are coming together, and when they do, it’s going to make something quite beautiful.
