The Sun Will Shine Again

The children’s’ song “Rain, Rain Go Away” is appropriate for my area of the country.  Heavy and continual storms lingered for days, leaving roads closed, fields underwater, and rivers pushing over their banks.  Persistent gray skies affect the temperament of everyone.  There’s an attitude that sneaks in and causes us to want to hide under the covers until the storms pass.  After all, who wants to face another day of running through the rain or fight yet another losing battle with a windblown umbrella?  Watching the rain fly by my window makes me think it will never end.  Fortunately, we all know the sun will shine again.

Similarly, when we’re in the middle of a storm in our personal lives, we can be sure the sun is going to shine on us again too.  The storm will not last, so we keep looking forward.  “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”  (2 Corinthians 4:18)   Unfortunately, we are all going to experience storms in our lives.  Fortunately, God is our constant protection.  “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” (Psalm 46:1-3) Hold tight in the storm, because God has a beautiful future planned with you in mind“He has made everything beautiful in its time…no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”  (Ecclesiastes 3:11)  Are there troubled skies around you?  You can put the umbrella away, because it’s time for the sun to shine again.

Unconditional

There’s a children’s book I read to my nephew called, No, David!   In the book, a carefree 4 year-old is relentless in his pursuit of fun.  Unfortunately, his boisterous ways breaks a favorite vase. He also scribbles on the walls in purple crayon and sticks most of his supper up his nose.  Arguably, his most humorous transgression was running down the sidewalk naked.  (WARNING: Do not try this at home! ) Yet even with his multiple infractions, the day ends perfectly.  We see his mom gently holding David, softly whispering, “I love you.”   Thankfully, David is not defined by his many mistakes, but by the unconditional love of his mother.

Our days can be riddled with problems too.  We may have relationship, health, or financial issues.  But at the end of the day, we are not defined by our challenges.  God calls us His own. “But now, this is what the Lord says…’Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.'” (Isaiah 43:1) Fortunately, God constantly watches over His children.  “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to his heart; He gently leads those that have young.” We are not facing any day alone; we always have a Helper in the trying times. “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you.'” (Isaiah 41:13)  Therefore, we can start each day by turning over our worries, our problems, and our pain.  We can move through the day leaning into a loving God.  Lastly, as the day ends, we can listen for His gentle voice softly whispering, “I love you.” So let’s walk in perfect peace each day, for we have the unconditional love of our Father.

The Inside Scoop

On a recent trip to Maui, my friends and I decided to drive the famous Hana Highway.  It’s a twisting, winding, and narrow road that crosses 46 bridges that are one lane wide.  The road contains hundreds of hairpin curves.  As you enter these ‘no-visibility’ bends in the road, you must blow your horn to warn oncoming traffic.  There are mile-markers along the way, yet this famous highway is void of signs to alert tourists to Black Sand Beach,  numerous flowing waterfalls, or bamboo  hiking trails.  Luckily, someone told us about buying a ‘Road to Hana Highway CD.’  This gave us an inside scoop on a perfect day: when to keep going, when to slow down, and when to stop and enjoy.  Our experience that day was immeasurably better with guidance!

Similarly, God wants to guide us every day.  We don’t have to blindly navigate the unexpected twists and turns of life. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) It’s true sometimes we just don’t know which way to go, but we can get help.  “I’ll help the blind walk, even on a road they do not know; I’ll guide them in directions they do not know.  I’ll turn the dark places into light in front of them, and the rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I won’t abandon them.” (Isaiah 42:16)  In challenging times, sometimes all we see are the mile markers; however, we have the inside scoop on how to navigate the road.  “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.”  (Isaiah 48:17)  With that in mind, let’s just be sure we’re following the right signs.

He’s Alive!

While vacationing in Maui, I had the opportunity to see a lot of animals in their natural environment.  Most of them swam underwater but occasionally rose to the surface only to dive below again.   On a snorkeling tour, we saw around 20 spinner dolphins swimming right near the boat.  There was even a baby who jumped playfully out of the water!  From a distance we saw a humpback whale breaching.   It was amazing! While snorkeling, a green sea turtle glided right near my elbow, then swam to the surface for a breath of air.  Another day, my friends and I went out paddle boarding in the crystal clear waters of the Pacific.  There we were shocked to see a hammer head shark swim about 10 feet below us.  I am happy to say he DID NOT swim to the surface.  Looking back at the dolphins, whales, and turtles, it wasn’t surprising to see them at the top of the water.   We knew that even though they swam in the deep, they would eventually rise to the surface.

That’s what happened so many years ago on the Sunday following Jesus crucifixion.  He arose!  Although the Pharisees thought they would keep Him down, there was already a plan in place for Jesus to be victorious.  Luke 24:6-7, He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day be raised again.'”  With Jesus resurrection, everything changed.  A song from Hillsong says it best.   “Hallelujah, Jesus is alive; Death has lost its victory and the grave has been denied.  And Jesus lives forever, He’s alive!  He’s alive!”  Because Jesus conquered death, He gave us victory over all our trials too.  Hallelujah, He’s alive!

A Healthy Choice

Sitting in an airport in the early morning hours is a perfect place to people watch.  You can see all walks of humanity, and they come with a plethora of moods and a multitude of attitudes.  Watching kids is especially entertaining because they are not stressed with traveling; they are dancing in the open areas, climbing on chairs, and giggling from the sheer joy of living.  The adults however, often have a harried look.  I lazily watched the craziness of the airport until I was unexpectedly thrust into the fray when tornadoes derailed most of the flights to my connecting airport.  What should I do?  Based on what I was witnessing, I had options.  I could yell, throw a tantrum, or get angry at the airline personnel.  But how could that possibly help the situation?   There simply HAS to be a better way.

Actually, adding a little ‘fruit’ to my diet during this trying time would be a perfect response.  From Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  When life gets messy, let’s not take our frustrations out on the people around us, but instead, let’s choose to be kind.  Otis Redding used to sing, “Try a little tenderness…”  Even when the situation is out of control, we don’t have to be“Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” (Proverbs 3:3) It’s good to remember that everyone is fighting some kind of battle.  We can deliberately choose to live a lifestyle where we build each other up.  “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor…”  (Romans 12:10)  When things aren’t going the way you want them to, do something just for you. Grab some fruit, because that’s always a healthy choice.

Straight Towards the Light

My class walked to the library early this morning in a light rain with warm air.  Since we weren’t dealing with a cold wind and pelting, unforgiving rain, it was a bit of an adventure.  About an hour later, however, everything changed.  The next class walked in a thick fog with significantly colder air.  That walk to the library wasn’t enjoyable; we put our heads down and marched determinedly on.  Thankfully, the cool and damp air was soon forgotten in the light and warmth of the library.

Life has a way of throwing unwanted surprises at us too.  One minute we’re walking along just fine and in the next instant we are facing a sickness, a loss, or a challenge that seems too much to bear.  But similar to the library, we can look to the Light for rescue.  Jesus said, “I am the world’s Light; no one who follows Me stumbles around in the darkness.  I provide plenty of light to live in.”  (John 8:12)  Truth be told, we can have shelter from every storm. “For He will hide me in His shelter in time of trouble, He will conceal me in the cover of His tent; and set me high upon a rock.”  (Psalm 27:5)  We don’t have to be afraid on the dark days, because we are protected.  “God is our refuge and strength, a tested help in times of trouble.  And so we need not fear even if the world blows up and the mountains crumble into the sea.” In the middle of a storm? Put your head down and walk straight towards the Light, because once you step in, you’ll be surrounded by God’s warmth and protection.

God is in the Details

Burnt rolls, undercooked roast beef, and runny casserole.  What do they have in common?  They happened in my kitchen, when I was cooking.  Although up for debate, my biggest blunder happened when I was a preteen.  My family was going to be surprised with my chocolate chip cookies. I was pretty impressed with myself as I took the cookies out of the oven.  Proudly I carried  them into the living room to share with my brothers and they enthusiastically grabbed them.  However, their groans, cries of distress, and strong words, (I am deliberately leaving those words out), caused me great confusion.  Apparently, substituting salt for sugar in a recipe is a bad idea.  Who would have thought a cup of salt could make such a fuss? I guess I should have been paying better attention to the details.

Fortunately, God keeps a close watch on His ‘projects.’  From the start, He was always watching over us. “You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” (Psalm 139:16)  He doesn’t wander off and think about other things like I do.  Genesis 28:15, “What’s more, I am with you, and will protect you wherever you go…I will be with you constantly until I have finished giving you all I am promising.” And let’s face it, He’s promising a lot!  He’s arranging things in our favor.  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  (Jeremiah 29:11)  Unlike me, God is always paying attention.  When He starts something, you know it’s going to be simply amazing.  After all, the details are His specialty.

Strong Hands

Recently I saw a movie that had God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit as an integral part of the storyline.  They each interacted with the main character, (Mackenzie), and supported him in his heartache and pain.  Many scenes gripped my heart and sent my emotions on a roller coaster ride.  But one scene in particular continues to visit my thoughts.  Mackenzie steps out of a small boat and literally walks on the water with Jesus.  Later, when he tries it again, instead of walking on the water, he sloshes through it.  He looks back at Jesus in confusion.  Jesus lovingly says, “This always works better when we do it together, don’t you think?”  (Good point to ponder.)

How often do we try to face difficult situations alone?  Why don’t we take a minute to remember that Jesus is always wanting to walk through the storms with us?  Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)  God sees the storms long before they reach us, and He’s already dealt with them.  “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)  When the storms come, we don’t have to stand out in the rain alone.  Let’s go ahead and grab hold of God’s hand, because He’s absolutely not letting go of ours.

Spring Ahead

Not surprisingly, we’ve had another shift in weather in northwest Ohio.  We had fierce winds the other night and those winds left behind colder temperatures and an obvious chill in the air.  My furnace is running constantly, trying to keep up with the sudden change.  Despite the cold, when I look out my windows the sun is shining brightly.  And even though there was snow on the ground this morning, I can see the tiniest buds sneaking out on the branches of the trees in my yard.  Spring is on the way.

How many of us, through trials and challenges, have felt like winter has come to stay?  Who’s looking for a change in your circumstances; who’s hoping for spring?  We have assurance that the tough times in our lives are not going to last.  “See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.  Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.” (Song of Solomon 2:11-12)  We don’t need to look at all the things around us that aren’t perfect, we can fix our eyes on the things that give us hope.  “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.”  (Proverbs 4:25)  Our circumstances will try to hold us back; however, God leads us forward to  beautiful pathways.  “You’re blessed when you stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God.  You’re best when you follow His directions, doing your best t0 find Him. (Psalm 119:1-2)  The Earth is still moving around the sun, so let’s keep moving too.  Let’s leave winter behind and walk into the new season God has planned for us.

Amazingly Possible

When I’m in a Zumba class, sometimes I don’t think I’ll make it all the way to the end.  I’ll cruise through the warm-up, make it through 3 or 4 songs, and then somewhere in the middle I question my sanity for being there.  (To be completely honest, there have been people who have questioned my sanity in other areas of my life, but that’s another story…) I know I’m not alone in my exhaustion, because I see people glancing at the clock and peeking at their watches.  Just when I’m thinking of an excuse to sneak out of class, I hear my favorite words, “Last song.”  It’s amazing how that changes my attitude.  Instead of quitting, I finished!

In the testing times of life, you can keep going too.  God is right there with you, giving you strength.  Isaiah 40:28-31, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” You can get through this.  Your current challenge may seem insurmountable, but God has brilliant ways to deal with the impossible.  Jesus said, “All things are possible for him who believes.” (Mark 9:23) So take some advice from Moses, who knew a thing or two about impossible situations, “Don’t be afraid.  Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today.” (Exodus 14:13)
