You’ve Got This!

You've got this. Runner on a forest trail.
Runner on a forest path

Driving out of my subdivision, I saw some runners from Anytime Fitness. Most people had completed the marked path but I saw one woman struggling to finish. I could tell she was tired as she moved with slumped shoulders, each step a fight to keep moving. Although she was running alone, others from the gym moved in her direction to cheer her on. I couldn’t hear what they were saying but I imagine it went something like this: “You’ve got this!” “Keep going, you’re almost there!”  “You can do it!” As I turned off my street, I lost sight of the action from the gym.  Even though I didn’t witness it, I believe the last runner completed the course.  She ran with a voice in her head saying, “You’ve got this!”

Too many times we face trials in life that make us want to quit.  But God is saying, “You’ve got this!” Although the world would push us down, God has many ways to pull us up.   “Don’t be afraid, because I’m with you; don’t be anxious, because I am your God.  I keep on strengthening you; I’m truly helping you.  I’m surely upholding you with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 ISV) God knows what to do with the things that come against us.  “Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in power.  Your right hand, O Lord, smashes the enemy.” (Exodus 15:6 NLT) When we have a destination in mind and every obstacle known to man is blocking us, we know where to turn.  Let’s point our running shoes towards a place of protection.  “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”  (Psalm 46:1 ESV) In this perfect sanctuary we catch our breath, square our shoulders, and keep moving towards our goals.  And if we listen very carefully, we’ll hear him say, “You’ve got this!”

Despite the Obstacles-Keep Going

Lush waterfalls keep going over rocksAlthough waterfalls face constant opposition, they just keep going. My friends and I saw dozens of them on our trip to Maui, each unique and breathtaking in their own right. One thing the waterfalls had in common: they all had to push through obstacles to reach the zenith of their destiny.  One waterfall was hidden deep in the woods where tree branches and rocks in the river fought to slow the cascade.  Another time, we hiked 2 miles through a bamboo forest to see the determined descent of a mountain’s waterfall.  Others climbed over boulders, fought past rocky ledges, and crashed around manmade obstructions.  Nonetheless, they all kept going, displaying their beauty and their strength.

Each of us have dreams and goals just waiting to be fulfilled. Unfortunately, there are obstacles that get in our way too.  And yet, we don’t face them in our own power. “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13 WEB) It can be overwhelming to face repeated setbacks.  Delays in our plans cause frustration.  Constant battles wear us out.  But God helps us in these situations. “He gives strength to those who are tired; to the ones who lack power, he gives renewed energy…But those who wait for the Lord’s help find renewed strength; they rise up as if they had eagle’s wings, they run without growing weary, they walk without getting tired.” (Isaiah 40: 29,31 NET) We each have a destiny to fulfill, a carved out niche in our little corner of the world.  There are going to be situations, setbacks, and even people who try to stop our forward progress.  “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT) In God’s strength we keep going through every obstacle.  In God’s goodness our future becomes beautiful.

Find the Higher Ground

My family planned a week-long outing at one of our favorite campgrounds.  Upon arrival, I discovered the road leading into the campground was under six feet of water.   There is a road that leads out of the campground, but when I checked, it was flooded too. What to do now?  Four campers were on the way and we needed to find higher ground.  As it turned out, there was an access road at the back of the campground.  Fortunately, it was at a higher elevation.  When the campers arrived, I was uneasy about staying.  Despite my reservations, my brother informed me all the water would be gone in a day and the sun would even dry the water near our campers.  To my delight, he was right. It turns out that camping on higher ground has its benefits.

God wants to lead us to higher ground too.  He knows the world will bring us trouble, but he wants to replace the problems with peace.  “I have told you this so that through me you will have peace.  In the world you’ll have trouble, but be courageous-I’ve overcome the world!”  (John 16:33 ISV)  When we find ourselves facing a flood, we need God to guide us to higher ground.  “The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.  I will advise you and watch over you.'” (Psalm 32:8 NLT)   Unexpected and unpleasant circumstances can invade our days.  But even during the most challenging times of our lives, God’s plan for our good is unchanging.  “‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the LORD, who has compassion on you.” (Isaiah 54:10 NIV)  Let’s stay in peace when the waters rise.  And by all means, let’s find the road that leads to higher ground.

Hold onto the Good

My youngest brother, Bob, is a charter boat captain on Lake Erie.  Most days you’ll find him on the lake with groups of eager fishermen ready for a day of fun.  They’re fishing for walleye and yellow perch.  However, the white perch, invasive to Lake Erie, gets caught too.  This was the case when Bob took my family fishing.  I was amazed at the dozens of times a white perch was on someone’s line.  My brother, who’s an expert in his field, knew exactly what to do.  He’d unhook the offensive fish and immediately drop it back in the water; the large walleye was dropped into the ice cooler.  Bob knew to hold onto the good and let go of the bad.

That’s exactly what we need to do with our thoughts: hold onto the good and let go of the bad.  Too many times we let worries and fears fill our thoughts.  “Can any one of you by worrying add a single day to your life? So do not worry , saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. ” (Matthew 6:27; 31; 33 NIV) God is always with us; therefore, we don’t have to be afraid. “Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV) We can hold on to the good thoughts that remind us God is on our side.  “Do not fear!  Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which he will accomplish for you today…the Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.” (Exodus 14:13-14 NASB) Remember, we don’t have to keep anything negative. Instead, we can hold onto the good.

A Bright Day is Coming

My family is camping near Lake Erie and we’re hoping for a bright and sunny day today.  After raining all day yesterday, it looked like today would follow suit.  The skies were overcast in the morning.  There was a light drizzle and absolutely no sun to see in the early morning hours.  We were wondering what we would do inside all day trying to entertain family from 3 years old to age 76.  But midmorning changed our thinking completely.  The sun began to burn away the clouds and by afternoon we had a full sky of sunshine and plenty of fun activities on tap.  It’s amazing how one moment in time can change everything.

Our lives can seem a bit dismal and dreary at times, but God is planning for a brighter day.  He wants to fill us with joy.  “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalm 16:11) God breaks through the clouds that seem to hang over us.  “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.”  (Psalm 94:19)  He doesn’t want us to walk through our days with our heads down, He wants us to be happy.  “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”  (John 15:11) Let’s look for the break in the clouds, and rest assured that a bright day is coming.  After all, Jesus said, “I came so that you could have life-indeed, so that you could live life to the fullest.”  (John 10:10) We can stop focusing on the clouds that try to cover our days, and instead, look towards the sun.  After all, with God at the center of our lives, we are guaranteed a bright day is coming.

Go a Little Higher

One day I saw a vent cover from the roof lying in my yard.  Thinking it would be a two minute fix, I decided to put it back on myself.  This involved lugging a 6′ ladder out back, climbing it, and carefully crawling Spiderman-style on the first level of my roof.  The second level was trickier.  To get on that level, I had to take a running start like a gymnast flying towards the pommel horse.  (Some advice:Stay away from visualizing this one.) The third level was a steep incline where I literally slid down to get to my destination.  Ironically, when I reached the vent I realized IT DIDN’T NEED A COVER!  After all that climbing, I discovered that some vents were covered but others were not.   Looking around, I could tell that this one belonged to my neighbor.  Things got clearer when I went a little higher.

Likewise, when life gets messy, it helps to go a little higher.  Instead of thinking about our problems, we can focus on God.  “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:2) Sometimes the problems that come at us don’t seem to have a solution.  But God is an expert in difficult situations!  When the disciples thought they encountered the impossible, “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but not with God.  For all things are possible with God.'” (Matthew 19:26) He promises to take care of our needs.  “And my God will supply all of your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4:19)  He meets ALL of our needs-completely, fully, entirely, absolutely.  Problems?  Challenges?  Stress? Give it all to God.  For when we go a little higher, we realize He can handle anything and everything.  “This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord.” (2 Kings 3:18)

Suddenly is Coming

My daisies suddenly burst open.  Truthfully, the  buds had been taking shape for days. Most of the year the daisies are just nice green plants, but for a month every year, they are stunning.  The day I planted the small flowers I hoped for the best.  Placing them gently in the ground, I gave them food and water.    On a consistent schedule, I fed them, (not bacon an eggs, but you know, plant food).  Although there were time I wondered if they’d make it, today they’re very strong.  Through the years the flowers have multiplied.  And then suddenly, they are glorious to behold.

Our lives are unfolding in the same way.  It takes a long time to reach our fullest potential.  Fortunately, we have a Master Gardener watching over us.   “Sing about a fruitful vineyard: I, the Lord, watch over it; I water it continually.  I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.”  (Isaiah 27:2-3)  There are days when we don’t feel it, but our strength is growing.  God is diligent towards His children.  “The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you at dry and restoring your strength.  You will be a well-watered garden, like an ever flowing spring.”  (Isaiah 58:11) Waiting takes patience, but there is beauty in our future.  “And this is going to be a glorious unfolding.  Just you wait and see and you will be amazed.  You’ve just got to believe the story is so far from over; So hold on to every promise God has made to us.  And watch this glorious unfolding…”  (Song: Glorious Unfolding by Steven Curtis Chapman)  God’s been planning good things for a long time.  In an instant, we’ll see His beauty unfold.  “I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. (Isaiah 48:3)

Great Expectations

Hope is the joyful expectation that something good is about to happen.  I couldn’t help thinking about hope while sitting at a graduation party tonight while numerous conversations played around me.  They were filled with plans of the future, loaded with lofty goals and big dreams.  All the seniors were looking ahead, making plans to find their place in this great big world.  The theme throughout the party: an expectation of a bright and exciting future.  God couldn’t agree more.  “‘For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future.'” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Here’s good news: God planned for each of us to have hope!  Even on the tough days, we can keep hoping.  “But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love.  We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.  In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name.  May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” (Psalm 33:18, 20-22) The beauty of being a child of God is knowing He hears us when we pray.  Therefore, we can be flooded with hope!  “Lord, hear me as I pray; pay attention to my groaning… Listen to my voice in the morning, LordEach morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly. (Psalm 5:1-3) Just like the seniors, we can let go of the past and grab onto a bright and exciting future.   Furthermore, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

Let It Go

There are times in life when it’s best to take the advice of a popular Disney song and ‘Let It Go.’  My family had a large garage sale this weekend and we followed that mantra. We decided to stop holding on to things that we no longer needed.  Six different families contributed to the sale at my mom’s and tables were filled with kitchen items, house décor, and small appliances.  Outdoor and indoor furniture pieces were strategically placed in the driveway while adult clothes were draped in the garage. One entire area of the driveway was filled with everything baby: stroller, clothes, stuffed animals, and numerous musical toys.  Although the sale was a plethora of different items, they all had one thing in common: it was time for them to go.

Similarly, we have things in our personal lives that we need to let go.  We don’t have to hold onto worry, stress, pain, or fear.  We can choose to ‘let it go.’  C.S. Lewis said, “Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars.  You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.” Letting go of worry and fear allows us to step into a future filled with strength and courage.  “The righteous shall move onward and forward; those with pure hearts shall become stronger and stronger.”  (Job 17:9) We can give it all to God.  When we hand it over, He carries the heavy load for us.  1 Peter 5:7, “Since God cares for you, let Him carry all your burden and worries.”  Let’s clean out all the thoughts that clutter our minds and weigh us down. However, let’s keep the treasures.  Lastly, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.” (Philippians 4:8)

Confident Expectation

The flowers I planted today were nice, but they hold no comparison to their future glory.  Right now they’re a bit sparse, a little droopy, and a bit on the small side.  Don’t get me wrong, the yellow flowers (coreopsis, yarrow, and petunias) on my front porch have already added a ‘touch of color.’ The red geraniums are taking a stand under the pergola of the back porch.  However, I am expecting more color as summer approaches.  My flowers need the basics: sun, water, and perhaps a sprinkling of Miracle-Gro.  But their greatest need: just a little more time.

Sometimes our circumstances need a little more time too.  But who wants to wait for situations to improve?  And what’s so great about waiting?  Isaiah 40:31, “…but they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”  (Okay, so strength and endless energy, that sounds pretty great.)   Even if the waiting seems endless, stay strong!  “For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.  Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. (Habakkuk 2:3) The real question then: ‘How should we wait?’   We should wait with confident expectation because there are better days ahead. Psalms 27:31, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Here’s the truth: God knows your address, so with confident expectation you can be sure His goodness will arrive right on time.
