Hindsight is 20/20 but 20/20 Vision is Better

It’s easy for me to look back on my year and see the areas where I could have done better.  If I spent more time working out I could’ve lost the extra weight I’ve been carrying around.  Also, it’s a lot easier to write a book if I actually sit down at a computer to get my thoughts in order.  The list goes on and on.  I think hockey great Wayne Gretzky got it right when he said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” In reflection, I can see the places where I could have done things differently.

Thankfully, the calendar just turned the page to a new year. And, not only a new year, but a new decade! God established times and seasons when He created the world.  Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years.” (Genesis 1:14, NLT) Long ago, He planned this very year, this very decade.  Just imagine-20/20 vision for your future! Furthermore, who wouldn’t want to dream about beautiful days ahead?

God is planning something amazing for us in the coming days. “Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already–you can see it now! I will make a road through the wilderness and give you streams of water there.” (Isaiah 43:19, GNT)  God is making a way for us when it looked like there wasn’t a way. Consequently, it’s time to start dreaming again! We are entering a new season. We need to wrap our minds around this: God is for us.  He wants us to succeed.  God says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor…” (2 Corinthians 6:2, NIV) Something good is on the horizon. Get a vision for it-and make it 20/20.

God’s Help is Available Every Morning

My mom and I are getting ready to go on vacation.  Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts are on the agenda.  Consequently, we’ve been planning and preparing for quite some time.  We perused travel brochures and picked specific activities for each state.  I’ve wrote notes on cities we plan to visit, downloaded train and ferry schedules, and checked prices for the tours we wanted to take.  On top of that, we booked an amazing hotel.  I even checked the area weather and we packed our suitcases accordingly.  How’s that for being prepared? (The Boy Scouts would be impressed!)

Here’s a question: how much do we prepare for our day? Most of us hit the ground running in the morning.  We take a speedy shower, grab a quick breakfast, and run through the door. Basically, we hope for a good day.  However,  there’s another way to prepare for our day-by asking for help.  “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:2, NIV) God’s help is available every morning .  What’s more, He will support us,  give us wisdom, and give us peace during the challenging moments of our day.  After all, “God’s kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life…” (Psalm 23:6, CEV). Last but not least, tomorrow morning, we’re going to make some changes to our morning routine.  We’re going to ask for support, because God’s help is available every morning.

Pick up the Good Stuff

Why is it that whenever I run into Wal Mart with only one item needed I walk out with a cart full of things? Seriously, I go from a $10.00 item to spending over $100.00.  It’s crazy, or ‘cray cray’ as my niece would say.  The problem is I pick up things as I walk along, many times without much thought.  I grab this and a little of that, and stock up here and refill something there…where does it stop?  Let’s not even talk about the grocery section, because one item will always become 20.  (I am not going to mention the things I grab when I walk into the store hungry…it’s not pretty…actually, I should probably just go undercover when this happens.)  Needless to say, it would be better if I left all the ‘quick grab’ items and only picked up the good stuff.

Every one of us, as we journey through each day, ‘pick up’ things that are better left alone.  Often it’s when we interact with others.  They may be angry, negative, or feeling defeated.  Instead of just supporting them, we inadvertently take on and internalize their emotions.  It’s not healthy to carry that negativity around all day.   Instead, when we are thinking about the difficult situations our friends and co-workers face, we need to renew our minds, to: ‘think good thoughts‘ as my friend Sarah would say.  Then our rough day gets transformed into a brighter day.  “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” (Romans 12:2, NLT) Let’s make a decision to keep our days positive, to pay attention to what we ‘pick up’.  “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8, NIV)

  1. Count your blessings.  Take time to think of the good things that are in your life.

Here Comes Your Suddenly!

Fall is one of my favorite seasons.  There’s something about the vibrant colors that appeals to me.  Some years fall sneaks in quietly, and other years it seems to arrive overnight. I call that a ‘suddenly’.  That’s what happened with a group of mums I picked up for my church.   They gave me a sneak-peek of their colors: speckled white, dappled orange, and dotted red.   But guess what? A few days ago when I watered them, I saw that everything changed.   The orange mums were loaded with flowers, the white ones  were crammed with blossums, and the red mums were overflowing with crimson buds.  I thought it would be a gradual process, but overnight the mums were fully dressed.  A suddenly took place.

We all have times in our lives when we need a suddenly.  We’ve been dealing with a problem for far too long: a health challenge, a difficult situation, or a financial crisis.  “Wait for the Lord. Be courageous, and He will strengthen your heart. Wait on the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14 ISV)  It’s counterintuitive to think if we wait around we will get a good result. But God says we will. “Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary. (Isaiah 40:31, NASB) So let’s be patient.  Let’s anticipate that things are going to get better.  Someday soon, quite unexpectedly, the problem we’ve been dealing with will be gone.  Take heart-here comes your suddenly!

Just Look Up

On a recent hiking trip out west, my  friend and I decided to tackle a major climb, deceptively called ‘Angel’s Rest.’  It was a 4.8 mile roundtrip hike rising continuously to 1,640 feet.   Someone had the nerve to call it a ‘moderate’ climb.  (Tell that to my pounding  heart.) . Unfortunately, from the onset we were challenged.  The trail began with rocks covering the first switchback, forcing us to pick our way carefully to keep from stumbling.  After an hour of a steady climb, we stopped regularly to let our lungs catch up.  During the 2nd hour, we were fighting fatigue and shortness of breath.  By the 3rd hour, if we looked up, the top of the mountain came into view.  Yet we still had several switchbacks to get there. Despite the challenges, we finally made it to the top; the stunning view making the obstacles a distant memory.

We all have goals and dreams out in front of us. Quite frankly, the list can seem endless.  (Here’s a thought: Why is it every time we decide to lose weight someone walks in the room with doughnuts?) Let’s face it: when we decide to move forward there will be obstacles in our path.  If we look up, we will find help. “I look to the mountains; where will my help come from? My help will come from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121: 1-2, GNT) Sometimes our dreams seem so far away we’re afraid we’ll never reach them. “Don’t be afraid, because I am with you; don’t be anxious, because I am your God. I keep on strengthening you; I’m truly helping you. I’m surely upholding you with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, ISV) Even with the challenges, we can fulfill our dreams.  After all,  we know where our help comes from; just look up.

You Get to Choose

In Robert Frost’s poem, ‘The Road Not Taken,’ we see life continually forces us to make choices. You get to choose, even though deciding what to do can be difficult. Often one choice is easier, so it feels right to walk in that direction. However, there can be a difficult choice that will be more rewarding in the end. Hmm…what to do? What to do? I’m not completely sure Mr. Frost had it all figured out, but my favorite lines in the poem suggest he did. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the diffference.” He implies that not taking the easy route, the road that is calling us, has changed his life. Can it change ours?

How often do we walk down the road of fear? Considering the amount of things that this world throws at us in one day, this is certainly an easy road to choose. Along this road we can stumble on the roadblocks: panic, anxiety, and distress. The journey on this path slows our forward progress and steals our joy. Clearly, we need to choose another road.

Here’s good news: God went before us and laid out a sheltered road. “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will never fail you nor abandon you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NLT). On this road our strength will rise, and peace and joy will follow us. “The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace.” (Psalm 29:11, NASB) Think of this: there are two paths we can walk on: one will increase our worry, and the other will increase our faith. Choose wisely, for it will make all the difference.

A Perfect Gift

At Christmastime, I start thinking about spending time with my friends and family. I love knowing that I am going to see my whole family on Christmas Day. For example, my large family begins with my mom, flows through my brothers and their spouses, and then collects all the nieces and nephews. The top age is 78 and ends, (for the time being), at a 2 year old. It’s quite a crew! The farmhouse where my mom recently moved will burst at the seams with all the people, food, and presents. At the end of the day, I’ll have presents to take home, some of the kind I’ll need to carry to my car. But honestly, the real treasures I get that day will be the memories-the laughter at my brothers’ crazy stories, the happiness of the kids with their toys, (or the fun of playing with the leftover boxes), and the realization that this day is a perfect gift.

Truthfully, not every day feels like a perfect gift. There are days when life takes a shot at us, and it seems too much to take. Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting this battle called life all alone. But that’s not true, because long, long ago we received the perfect Christmas gift. It came in the form of a little baby in the small town of Bethlehem. Likewise, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). (Matthew 1:3, NIV) God is with us. That means  we don’t ever need to face another tough day alone. We have God by our side. “The Lord is with me, I shall not be afraid.” (Psalm 118:6, NIV) So this Christmas, even if we open an ugly sweater or a 6 pack of underwear, it’s okay, because we’ve already been given the perfect gift.

Watch out for the Potholes

I push mow my elderly neighbor’s lawn.  It’s a beautiful, thick lawn that loves to grow and takes about 45 minutes to mow.  I enjoy being outside so I really don’t mind.  But I do mind that there are around 4-5 holes in her yard that are difficult to see because of the thick grass.  Invariably, I step in at least one each time I mow.  My ankles do not enjoy this added feature of lawn care! They end up hurting me all week long. It would help if I’d  pay more attention and watch for the holes, but they seem to continually  sneak up on me. I wish someone would have told me to watch out for the potholes.

Likewise, if we’re not careful, life can trip us up.   Negative thoughts have a way of sneaking up on us, and before we realize it: worry and fear have moved in.  When this happens, our own thoughts hold us down.  They keep us from living a peaceful life.  God wants to help with this.  “Don’t be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think…” (Romans 12:2, CEV) Trusting God in our difficult situations is a great place to start.  When we look to him, we begin to feel his peace.  “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isaiah 26:3, NLT). Life offers plenty of chances for worry to sneak into our thoughts.  God has an answer for each one.  Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel. “(Philippians 4:6-7, CEV) My advice: watch out for the potholes!

God Can Change Circumstances

At the Victorian Bed and Breakfast where I work, a festive wedding shower was scheduled.  There were so many things to do to get ready for this event!  We worked on the landscaping beds and the flower baskets, we swept and dusted the great room, the massive deck was power-washed, the tables were set, and the lunch was prepared.  At the scheduled time, the happy guests came in carrying their colorful presents. There was only one problem: the bride-to-be  wasn’t there.  She was stuck in California, still trying to catch a plane to Ohio.  Ever have one of THOSE days?

We all have days when we feel like we’ve missed it: an opportunity, a chance, or God’s best for our lives.  Here’s good news: there are better days ahead.  But we need God’s help. “The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time.” (Psalm 34:17-19, NLT) God can change circumstances.  When it seems like we’re stuck in a rut, he can move us forward.   “For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:19, NLT) If you’re longing for change and for the chance to get out of the place you find yourself in…trust God…but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”(Isaiah 40:31, NLT) How’s that for a change in circumstances?

Lessons From a 4 Year-Old

My family spent a fun week camping at my brother’s-swimming in the pool, fishing and tubing on Lake Erie, and visiting Kelly’s Island. My nephew Ben participated in every activity. Because of this, I learned a few simple lessons.  Ben took his floatie off in water over his head so he could try swimming to his mom and grandma.

Lesson 1-It’s okay to trust when you’re surrounded by love and protection He climbed right onto the inner tube in the middle of Lake Erie knowing his Uncle Bob would drive the boat slow so he wouldn’t fall in.

Lesson 2-You don’t have to be afraid when you’re in good hands. Ben fell asleep beside me sitting on the bow of our moving boat.

Lesson 3-You can rest when you know someone is watching over you.

These lessons can apply to all areas of our lives.

Lesson 1-It’s okay to trust when you’re surrounded by love and protection. We don’t have to let the trials of life overtake us.  When we’re in over our heads, we can choose to trust God.  “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, CSB)

Lesson 2-You don’t have to be afraid when you’re in good hands. There are so many things in this life that can make us afraid.  But we are safe with God.  “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, CSB)

Lesson 3-You can rest when you know someone is watching over you.  It’s hard to feel peace when troubles pull us down.  But we don’t have to face one day alone.  “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8 NIV) Questions? See a 4 year-old for answers.
