Perfect Timing

field-for-blogNone of us like to be kept waiting.  We are easily frustrated by long check out lines, slow traffic patterns, and even the popcorn we just put in the microwave seems to takes too long.  But there’s a group of people who know a little something about waiting: American farmers.  They prepare the land, sow the seed, irrigate, fertilize, and then patiently wait.  I know a few farmers and I’ve never seen one try to make it rain, (but I would absolutely video tape it if they did).  Farmers know what to do to get good results: work hard every day, put in a FULL day, use techniques to ensure success, then step back and wait for the harvest. From Galatians 6:9, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Let’s face it, farmers know how to wait.

Do we?  How many times do we try to speed up events in our lives instead of letting them unfold naturally?  In every situation, we need to do all we are able, then step back and allow God’s timing to take place.  From Psalm 130:5-6, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning…”  What have you been hoping for, longing for, waiting for…?  Even if it’s taking a long time, do all that you know to do, then expect that something good is going to happen.  You can trust that God knows a thing or two about timing. From Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…”  So hold tight, wait patiently, and trust God, because His timing is perfect.

Changing Perspectives

hiking-blogThe Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain is quite a climb.  While navigating the mountain I came across narrow, pebbled-filled paths, boulders that I had to literally crawl over, and hundreds of larger rocks where I stepped carefully as I passed over them.  Many challenges warred with the goal of reaching the top: the relentless heat in Phoenix, the weight of the water bottles that absolutely must be carried, and the lack of visual confirmation that any progress was being made. The hike to the summit seemed endless as every thought told me to give up: it’s just too hard, it’s just too far, and I just can’t do this.  Then suddenly it happened, I came to the end of the trail and all that went before me seemed trivial: my perspective changed when I was standing at the top.

Our journey through life is like this.  We have challenges we must face, hardships that slow us down, and times we want to quit.  II Chronicles 15:7 says, “But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.”  When the path seems endless, keep going.  When you can’t see your way to the other side of the problem, keep going.  When it seems this is too much for one person to handle, keep going.  Philippians 4:13 assures us, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”  Even if the mountain before you looks too big for you, press on; you have what it takes to get through this.  Tap into that inner strength that comes directly from God.  And when you reach the top, let go of all those troubles that tried to stop you, and grab onto the amazing place where you’ll be standing.

It’s All Coming Together

sunrise-for blogFor my mom’s 60th birthday, I wanted to do something really special for her so I decided to sew her a quilt.  There was only one small glitch in my lofty plan: I didn’t know how to sew.  Luckily, I knew someone who did.  The Family and Consumer Science Teacher (Home Ec to me), was an expert.  She opened her classroom for sewing nights and patiently taught me each step.  Quilters seem to have their own foreign language.  When I heard ‘Stitch in the ditch” I thought it was a reference to where I should throw the pitiful-looking thing I was making.  My early work was not impressive!  Sometimes I’d look at those frayed squares and crooked stitches and doubt that it was going to develop into something worth making.  The waiting for a completed project seemed endless.  Yet surprisingly, little by little, something quite lovely began to take shape.  And finally, the completed work became a beautiful and treasured gift.

Your life can follow a similar pattern.  Sometimes you look at an individual day and wonder if the next will be better.  Waiting for a relationship to improve, bills to be paid, or a job issue to get resolved can overwhelm your days.  But rest assured, your life is going to get better.  God is working behind the scenes right now to improve your circumstances.  “I believe I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:13-14)  You can be sure there are brighter days right around the corner; so keep going, keep waiting, and start expecting something good to happen.  Ecclesiastes 3:11 assures us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time…” There may be a lot of frayed places in your life, but those loose ends are coming together, and when they do, it’s going to make something quite beautiful.

Get Good Directions

traffic-sign-808735_1920Have you ever felt like you were in a maze and couldn’t find your way out?  I felt that way as I drove to visit friends in Lafayette, Indiana.  I came upon Huntington, a city filled with one-way signs, detours around closed bridges, and blocked-off streets.  I caught on fast that I was in a labyrinth when the directions took me to the exact place I entered the city.   A pedestrian tried to help but soon realized even he was challenged with giving directions because of the many diversions throughout the town.  Just when I started wondering if he was about to say, “You can’t get there from here,”  he came up with an unexpected plan.  He suggested I follow him in his car through the maze of city streets and he’d point me in the right direction.  His plan worked perfectly!

How often do we feel as if we made a wrong turn in our own lives?  We find ourselves in the middle of something: a crisis, a challenging relationship, health issues, job stress, (fill in the blank), and we don’t know where to go from there.  We want to keep moving, but it’s as if we’ve hit another roadblock.  Should we keep going, change directions, make an adjustment, or simply adjust our attitude? Isaiah 30:21 tells us, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way: walk in it.'”  You CAN get specific directions, you just have to ask the right Person.   From Psalms 48:17, “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” So don’t be afraid to try that next adventure,  but be sure to get good directions before you go.

Miracles Still Happen

suns-rays-mountain blogWhen the financial aide administrator at my college told me I had to give  them $1,000 before he’d let me return for my senior year, he should of just told me to bring back the moon.  I’d used academic and sports scholarships, a few grants, and worked every summer on a farm to help me make it to my last year.  But $1,000?  Not possible, especially since I’d hoped to buy a car so I’d be able to drive to the school where I would do my student teaching.  I needed a miracle!  Not one, but two miracles happened in the middle of that summer.  The couple who owned the farm where I worked decided to give me their car (Who does that?).  Then, I was given a $1,000 check to ‘help me with my schooling.’  So there I was, standing at the top of what once seemed to be an insurmountable mountain.

What are you facing that looks impossible? What circumstance in your life needs a miracle? The Israelites knew what that felt like.  When they stood at the edge of the Red Sea with the Egyptian army closing in, it looked liked they had no options.  But Exodus 14:21-22 tells us, “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land.  The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through on dry ground…”  Is your back against the wall? No problem. God can make a way for you.  Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  So stay in faith, keep believing for your breakthrough, and by all means put on your hiking boots, because the mountaintop is waiting.

Blanket Protection

Findley State Park“Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superwoman!”  This is what I’m sure people are saying about me when I ride on the bike trail.  (I have no actual data to support this claim. My moderate speed also indicates people may be thinking I am taking a leisurely bike ride.  But you never know…) On the trail, you will see dog walkers, joggers, and a variety of serious to leisurely bikers.  Tonight while I was riding I came upon an elderly couple walking slowing and gingerly along the path.  As I drew near them I said, “I am passing on your left.” The gentleman immediately grabbed his wife’s hand and stepped between her and my bike.  There was something about that instant act of protection that moved me.  He didn’t hesitate, and in that perfect moment, the older man became her bodyguard.

Don’t we all wish we had someone to watch over us when we’re walking on this journey called life?  Here’s the good news: we do.  Isaiah 41:3, “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”  You’re not on this road alone, so even if the path is rocky and difficult, even if the storms of life try to slow you down, you can keep going.  Unexpected hazards are not going to stop you, because you have an unstoppable God who will shield and protect you all the days of your life.  Here’s your guarantee: “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8) So rest easy and keep walking forward,  because you have blanket protection: God covers it all.

The Trees Know a Secret

treeThis summer was a hot and dry one in Northeast Ohio.  There were relentless, unforgiving temperatures in the 90’s day after day.  A once-thriving lawn became brown from the scorching and arid summer.  Although we looked ridiculous, most of us in my neighborhood strategically mowed our lawns where the persistent weeds continued to grow. But here’s an enigma, throughout the dog days of summer, the trees in my yard were still green and thriving.  By looking at them, you’d think they received a perfect allotment of sunshine and rain.   But we know better than that!  Their secret is in the roots.  The roots grow deep to keep the tree stable, to absorb water from the soil, and to get much-needed nutrients.  For that reason, even in a drought, the tree remains healthy and continues to grow.

There’s a lesson for us here.  We go through tough times too.  Deadlines, pressures, bills, health issues, and challenges in relationships can make a season linger.   What do we do when we’re searching for the rain but we’re standing in the fire?  That’s when we go deeper to that place of absolute trust.  Jeremiah 17:7-8 says, “But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.  He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.  It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.  It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”  When trouble comes, and it surely will, we can stand firm because there is help available.   Nahum 1:7, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble.  He cares for those who trust in Him.”  So let’s learn a lesson from the trees: when we go a little deeper it will take us a little higher.

Expect Good Things

OSUI’m an Ohio State Buckeye fan, (say it with me now “O-H-I-O”).  When you’re a Buckeye fan, your expectations stay high.  Each game we get to see a strategic plan unfolding, observe an energy radiating from players on the field, and witness incredible displays of athleticism, (“Did you see that catch?”).  I can’t help but think about the 2011 game against Wisconsin that looked like OSU was letting a win slip away.  His team down 26-29, a minute and 10 seconds left on the clock, quarterback Braxton Miller winks at his coach and says, “We’re all right.” He was anticipating that something good was about to happen.  And it did!  Miller stepped onto the field and with 20 seconds left on the clock, threw a 40 yard touchdown pass to win the game.

In the same way, we can expect good things in our future.  It may seem that all the baggage we’re carrying from the past will hold us back, but we can let go of it.   From Isaiah 48:14, “Forget what happened in the past, and do not dwell on events from long ago.”  Instead of thinking about the troubles of yesterday, focus on the good of today and the beauty in tomorrow.  Proverbs 23:18 says, “Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.”  Just like in football, things can come against us (luckily, not a 6 foot, 300 pound lineman).  Life certainly has it’s share of challenges, but everyday we have the choice to look back or to look forward.  So let’s get a new game plan, and expect that something good is about to happen. Because if you check, you’ll see there’s still time left on the clock.

Love is Kind

rainbow-It’s that time of year when many of us are thinking about going back to school.  As a teacher,  I think about the kids who will be entering my classroom; they’ll come in all shapes and sizes and with various abilities and personalities.  This reflection reminds me of a new boy that entered my room one year who had trouble with his speech and was challenged with making friends.   We had an indoor recess one day and every child ran for their friends and began playing games.  The new boy looked around at the gathered groups, saw no one gesturing to him, and quietly picked up the blocks and went to a corner to play alone.  But then something beautiful happened.  Zoe, a well-liked and friendly girl, left her group of laughing friends, crossed the room, and sat down by the new boy to play blocks with him the entire recess.  Simply put, love is kind.

Jesus set the standard.  From Matthew 20:28, “…just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” Jesus always stopped for the weary, the sick, the poor, and the lonely.  The Bible is full of story after story of Jesus reaching out to those less fortunate.  The list is endless.  From Colossians 3:12-14, “So, as those who have been chosen by God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience…and above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

How does that relate to going back to school?  (And for that matter-how does it relate to everyone on the planet?)  It means we need to think about how to show kindness to those around us.  Still not sure what to do?  Follow the role models.  Follow Jesus, who is the perfect example of love and kindness.  Plus Zoe, the 10 year-old who left the easy and expected place to cross the room for the one who needed her.  And with that one action, she made the world a better place.

Keep Hope Alive

I’m a Cleveland Browns fan.  On most Sunday afternoons my tv will be tuned into the game.  But sometimes when the game gets frustrating, a nap sounds like a good alternative option.  But my mom and niece Dawn are diehard fans.  Here’s proof: One year they got tickets to go to a Steelers vs. Browns game, at Heinz Field.  It was one of those Sunday afternoons when the snow is falling relentlessly in a blizzard-type atmosphere and anyone even thinking of going to a game should have their head examined.  Yet Dawn and mom bundled up and covered all those layers with Brown’s coats, hats, and scarves.   As they boarded the downtown Pittsburg bus the place was packed with Steeler fans.  And every single one went silent when they saw the audacity of two orange and brown-dressed fans.  (Pause for awkward silence…)  Then finally the words, “Brown’s fans sit in the back.”  Can anyone relate to this? Are you the fan that will cheer for your team even if the odds are stacked against you?

What’s that about? One word: hope.  It doesn’t matter what’s happened in the past or even what the scoreboard says at the moment.  We still have a chance to win.  We will hope against hope that this is the season where our team shines.

In a similar way, we can have hope in our own lives when we need a personal breakthrough.  1 Corinthians 2:9, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.”  Are you in the middle of a tough time?  Take heart, because God is thinking about you.   His plans for you are beautiful.  From Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  So hang on, because there are better days ahead.  And turn on the game, because this is a new season, and this could be the one that changes everything.
